SUMMARY:
An Editorial Assistant opening at the Grand Central Publishing imprint responsible for providing editorial and administrative support to an Executive Editor who acquires SFF and Horror and adjacent fiction categories and an Executive Editor who acquires non-fiction specializing in music, pop culture, biography, and memoir.
This is a NYC based role. HBG's current hybrid model is 3 days in-office, 2 days working from home.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Interact professionally with authors and literary agents, as well as internal departments within the imprint and HBG, including design, publicity, marketing, production, sales.
- Prepare materials for and traffic editorial projects through all stages of the editorial process from acquisition through final book, including profit and loss statements (P&Ls), acquisition memos, transmittal materials, galley and flap copy
- Write catalog and promotional copy; prepare fact sheets.
- Enter title data into proprietary databases system and track data throughout publishing process.
- Read and report on manuscripts, proposals and books submitted for publication.
- Draft rejection letters for materials submitted for publication.
- Coordinate meetings and events.
- Attend and prepare materials for editorial meetings, and marketing and sales meetings as required.
- Review and discuss book proposals from literary agents as given by Executive Editors
- Research book sales using internal and external databases.
- Perform administrative duties, including: photocopying, sorting mail, filing, directing/responding to phone calls, etc.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Minimum of 1 year of publishing experience preferred (internships ok) or other editorial work experience.
- Excellent writing skills, and the aptitude to communicate effectively in both individual and group settings regardless of audience.
- Strong organization/administrative ability and meticulous attention to detail.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in an array of fiction and non-fiction.
- Solid computer skills, particularly Excel and databases.
- Ability to anticipate tasks and take initiative to solve problems while taking ownership of situations as needed.
- Capacity to manage multiple (and often competing) deadlines.

The compensation for this position is $47,500. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
