Job Description Summary

The Secondary Design Team Leader will lead a multi-skilled team to achieve the project objectives of the business.
As well as being a technical expert in Secondary Design, the candidate will be able to lead a team to focus on safety, quality, delivery and budget, in line with the priorities of the team, business and projects.
Working with the department manager, the candidate will also be responsible for people issues such as resource management, holiday and timesheet approval and the development of the team.

The team leader is to ensure the following:

Safety by design:

  • Safety is at the forefront of all design decisions made by the team.
  • All designs are produced to eliminate safety issues during construction.
  • That the relationship between quality, on time delivery and safety is understood.

Design Quality:

  • That the quality processes are being followed for all stages of the project.
  • Design reviews are recorded and store on the DMS.
  • Gate reviews are recorded and stored on the DMS.
  • Employer requirements and specifications are read and understood by the team.
  • Compliance with customer requirements and specifications.

Design Budget:

  • The functional budget is suitable and maintained on all projects.
  • All work is achieved as efficiently as possible.
  • All changes to design and scope are to be recorded and approved.

Design Delivery:

  • That the team is fully engaged in the planning process.
  • All work is to be delivered on time as agreed with the project team.
  • All planning meetings (war rooms) are attended.
  • Design freezes are taking place when appropriate.

Subcontracting:

  • The team is working with the sub-contracting package manager to achieve the deliverables for the project.

People Leadership:

  • All team members have a development plan which is tracked and maintained.
  • All team members have and understand the engineering priorities.
  • All team members holidays are approved, ensuring continuity in project delivery.
  • All team members timesheets are approved.

Process development:

  • That all team members understand and work to the Engineering Management Handbook (EMH) and regional procedures.
  • Improvements to processes are identified.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Relevant degree - electrical or mechanical, function of field of activity involved.
  • Good level of years engineering experience in the related activity/discipline, preferably in project & EPC type environment in T&D, Power Gen or Oil &Gas industry, or 2 to 4 Medium Set projects in position of Lead Engineer
  • Experience of project technical management processes, preferably in a multi-disciplinary team's context with multiple interfaces
  • Several experiences in managing externally subcontracted design work package of various sizes
  • Knowledge of AC and / or DC Transmission or Distribution industry
