Job Description Summary

The Engineering Improvement Leader is responsible for promoting and leading the implementation of improved engineering practices, from product definition through project execution. This role will be based in Wilmington, NC and will be responsible for working with employees and teams to identify and evaluate problems, manage change and drive impact using industry best practices and tools. The leader will be results-driven with a strong, proven ability to partner cross-functionally both within Engineering and across other functions.

Success in this role looks like: The role is part of the GE Hitachi Nuclear Engineering organization and will report to the Executive Engineering Manager. They will be accountable for engineering program excellence by collaborating with senior leaders and project teams on the implementation and sustainment of continuous improvements of critical business processes. Their goals are to; drive change with a specific emphasis on enabling best-in-class products with respect to safety and quality; engage teams to meet delivery of customer commitments; empower problem-solving; and leverage technology to achieve product leadership through development projects. They are responsible for participating in and improving the quality of the GEH Nuclear transformation community, growing the capacity of Leaders Driving Transformation.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

As the Engineering Improvement Leader, you will:

  • Develop and deploy transformation strategy: Create a comprehensive roadmap to implement new practices, tools and technologies including timelines, ownership, budget, governance and change management approaches.
  • Create focus for areas for improvement: Analyze current engineering processes to identify risks, bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and opportunities for standardization and optimization using data-driven insights.
  • Drive effectiveness of model-based systems engineering (MBSE): Improve capacity of teams to utilize digital models to capture system complexity, requirements management and to facilitate design collaboration across disciplines.
  • Drive effectiveness of data-centric design process: Improve capacity of teams to leverage data throughout design including use of 3D models and simulations.
  • Impact key performance measures: Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to track the progress of the transformation and measure its impact on safety, quality and efficiency.
  • Train and develop teams and team members: Provide training programs for project teams and engineers to equip them with the necessary practice skills to utilize new technologies and methods.
  • Lead change management: Communicate the vision for transformation to executive leadership and engineering teams, addressing concerns, and facilitating adoption of new practices.
  • Work collaboratively across the business: Lead improvement efforts across the engineering matrix and with business leaders in Product Development, Project Delivery, Sourcing and Quality
  • Build an engineering improvement organization: Indirect ownership and accountability for human performance improvement leaders, lean leaders and problem solvers across engineering.
  • Select and implement digital technology: Evaluate and drive decisions on new software tools, automation solutions, and digital platforms relevant to engineering processes.
  • Apply agile and hybrid program management methodologies: Adopt agile and hybrid program management practices to increase flexibility and responsiveness to changing requirements.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent 4-year technical degree.
  • 15+ years of experience in engineering design or engineering management within a complex engineering organization.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to envision and implement large-scale transformation plans to drive systemic, engineering improvements to support fulfillment of the company's strategy.
  • Proven ability to thoughtfully apply problem solving and engineering best practices to activities like NPD programs and large-scale commercial projects to drive sustainable growth and long-term value.
  • Experience with driving process and tools to better manage Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Configuration Management, Building Information Management (BIM).
  • System engineering experience able to quickly integrate inputs from across engineering disciplines.
  • Proven problem-solver able to leverage and coach tools like Kaizen, Value Analysis and Value Engineering (VAVE), Design 3P, TRIZ, A3, Problem Solving Process.
  • Experience with lean toolset including use of visual project management, daily management, roadmaps, strategy deployment action plans and resource funnels.
  • Ability to set clear project definitions and manage requirements for digital tools selection.
  • Ability to apply digital technologies to make an impact on engineering workflows.
  • Experience with implementation and management of hybrid/agile product development methods.
  • Proven leadership skills with experience driving cross functional change initiatives.
  • Excellent communication skills at a technical, managerial and stakeholder level.
  • Experience working in the nuclear industry or other highly regulated industry.

The base pay range for this position is $148,000-209,000. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for bonuses, such as a performance bonus/variable incentive compensation/equity. This position is expected to close on 4/25/2025.
