Staff Systems Engineer - Electric Power Software
Job Description:
Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role enables them to be onsite approximately 3 days per week.
The Role:
As a Staff Systems Engineer at GM focused on current VIP architecture, you are the linchpin in steering the architectural solution context and pragmatic improvements for the Embedded Platform Systems and Infrastructure (EPSI) team within the Electric Power (EP) Agile Release Train (ART). Your seasoned expertise and passion in the low voltage energy management domain will tie the entire ART together in unison to fuel the issue mitigation design and simplification of features relating to low voltage power generation, HV/LV systems coordination, and power management, ensuring seamless integration and interaction with the hardware components within the automotive embedded domain.

What You'll Do:
Design and Evolve the Solution Context, Architectural Vision, and Runway for the Electric Power ART:
- Own, understand and communicate the VIP architectural vision, solution context and pragmatic improvements, acting as an architect for the functional subsystems of the ART
- Focus on issue mitigation strategies in current VIP architecture and chart a developmental and integration course for pragmatic solutions in collaboration with the Scrum Managers, Scrum Leads and SSLEs
- Collaborate with internal/external teams to build the architectural runway, affected components, SW changes necessary and identify enablers
- Define the solution context including supported technologies, interfaces, and APIs, current and future deployment requirements, functional and non-functional requirements
- Engage in building system-level requirements and validating system performance against these requirements, ensuring validation strategies are robust, cost-effective, and efficient
- Collaborate with System Engineers, Product Managers, Lead Solution Architects, Subsystem Lead Engineers and others in the functional architecture development and decomposition to subsystems
- Provide input on solution deployment to ECUs
- Offer technical guidance for solution intent including technical specifications, interface requirements, context diagrams, decomposition diagrams, epic decomposition, and technical feasibility analysis
- Support Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) related planning and work acceptance meetings
- Define and support engineering best practices and uphold excellence with creation and enforcement of DFEMAs, AFMEAs, SFMEAs and SW development quality and efficiency implementation
Serve as Functional Domain Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the ART:
- Provide technical direction and guidance to agile teams throughout all phases of ART Kanban
- Collaborate with the Product Management Team to review and update backlog item definitions, develop acceptance criteria and benefit hypotheses, determine technical feasibility and scope estimates
- Offer technical guidance for the area of expertise, execute Epics, help resolve/close PRTSs, share lessons learned/best practices, and capture IP/ROI's/etc.
- Provide technical guidance for system design and integration, supporting sales presentations, technical solutions discussions, and product demonstrations
Additional Description
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field
- 5+ years of automotive engineering experience related to embedded controls, requirements development, architecture development, and/or systems engineering
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Exceptional collaboration and teamwork; demonstrated ability of leading cross-functional teams and influencing without direct authority
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects and assignments with a high level of autonomy and accountability for results
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
- Master's degree in Engineering with a focus on Controls, Electrical, Mechanical, and/or Systems Engineering
- Experience with low voltage electric power related components, controls, and architectures (automotive context)
- Familiarity with high voltage systems within electric and hybrid electric vehicles
- Proficiency in SAFe/Agile processes
- Experience executing production programs through launch
- Experience with safety critical design
- Record of innovation in systems, subsystems, or feature design: patents, awards, or publications
- Experience with JIRA, JIRA Align, Git Ecosystem, DOORs, and DNG
