The role of a Motorsports Aerodynamics Engineer is pivotal in the competitive world of racing. This position involves a dynamic range of responsibilities, from collaborating closely with GM's Key Partner teams to ensure peak vehicle performance, to fostering strong relationships within the motorsports community. You will be instrumental in both the virtual design and physical testing phases, optimizing aerodynamic features to shave off crucial seconds on the track. This opportunity not only requires a deep understanding of aerodynamic principles but also a passion for motorsports and a commitment to teamwork and innovation. The successful candidate will join a dedicated team, working at the forefront of automotive engineering to contribute to the legacy and continued success of GM's racing endeavors.

What You'll Do

  • Work closely with other aerodynamics engineers, design engineers, and race team staff to improve the performance of the complete racecar and implement aerodynamic refinements
  • Estimate drag, lift and other aerodynamic deliverables
  • Provide direction and actionable data to GM race teams to improve weekend performance
  • Support full car and subsystem models for use in detailed aerodynamic tests
  • Assist with planning, preparation and execution of wind tunnel tests
  • Organize test results into concise, presentable reports for proper decision making and implementation
  • Use GM CAD software to generate new aerodynamic concepts and refinements for both CFD and wind tunnel testing

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related subject with coursework in Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer and Fluid Mechanics
  • 5 or more years of Motorsports experience
  • Experience with computer tools, 3D CAD files, CAE methods and Experimental Data
  • Ability to multi-task in a dynamic, constantly evolving environment, with a talent for organization, collaboration, and communication
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Knowledge of experimental aerodynamics best practices
  • Ability to effectively work with others and support team goals
  • Basic knowledge of scripting and programming
  • Experience with data acquisition systems, data collection, and data processing

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Knowledge of motorsports race series regulations
  • Working knowledge of CAD design software (Siemens NX preferred)
  • Experience with the architecture and performance of NASCAR, IndyCar, Formula 1, and LMDh race vehicles
  • 3+ years of professional aerodynamic research experience
  • Masters or PhD in mechanical or aerospace/aeronautical engineering
  • Familiarity with aerodynamic and wind tunnel testing, measurement techniques and data systems
