Work Arrangement

This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the GM Tech Center in Warren, MI on a full-time basis.

The Role

Are you a highly creative design individual who is interested in being part of one of the most exciting design organizations in the world? General Motors North America has an exciting opportunity for a creative designer within the Industrial Design studio. We are looking for a Lead Designer who has experience with Graphic Design and Architectural Design and utilizes a digital design process. This individual would have a collaborative mindset, the ability work while representing the GM Behaviors, and deliver projects utilizing the skills noted below.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • Strategic Thinking - Understand research data, customer needs, competition, brand values, benchmark best in set, and incorporate into a vision that informs your creative proposals.


  • Creative Theming - Deliver a variety of original creative proposals that align to the strategy through sketches, comps, and/or visuals, as well as digitally through visualizations. Strong understanding of proportion, composition, and use of color.


  • Design Judgement - Maintain knowledge of current design trends and technology. Considers aesthetics, trends, graphics, form, proportion, requirements and reach to accurately assess, select, and develop design proposals. Balances theory and practical limitations.


  • High Quality Execution - Collaborate frequently with the design team, sculpting organization, engineering, and fabrication teams in the development and high-quality execution of projects. Ability to translate 2D concepts to large scale prints and/or 3D prototypes and final production.


  • Project Leadership - Exhibit courage and challenge expectations. Present ideas frequently to management to communicate design ideas. Provide insight and recommendations to leadership while possessing willingness and acuity to act upon feedback and direction in a deadline driven environment. Ability to manage multiple tasks and timelines. Establish and maintain cross-functional relationships. Ability to work independently and within a team as well as provide mentoring.

Additional Description

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communication Design or Graphic Design


  • 7+ years of professional experience in a design related field


  • Ability to work digitally using creative software and willingness to learn new software as needed for collaboration / growth

Proficient in design principles, elements, and techniques, including:

  • Typography


  • Layout


  • Brand Identity


  • Brand Strategy/Brand Architecture Strategy


  • Brandmark, Wordmark, Letterform or Abstract marks


  • Pattern Design


  • Icon, Symbol, and Glyph Illustration Design


  • Infographic Design


  • Composition/Grid systems


  • Color Theory (HEX, CMYK, RGB, Pantone, and Alpha)


  • Apparel Branding


  • Motion and or Interactive Design


  • Signage and Wayfinding Design


  • Livery Design


  • Template Design for Presentations, Emails, and Social Media

Knowledgeable in:

  • Production across all graphic design platforms print, digital and dimensional


  • The latest graphic design trends


  • Research and benchmarking
