GE Aerospace is leading the way in introducing Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) into commercial and military aerospace and applications. As a Research Scientist in the Composites organization at the GE Aerospace Research Center, you will conduct research on developing advanced materials and processes for a broad range of current and future GE Aerospace products. A primary area of focus includes ceramic matrix composites for advanced applications in extreme environments.
Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities
You will:
- Conduct basic and applied research in processes and technology for advanced composites of interest to GE Aerospace and external funding agencies
- Develop novel advanced composites for various GE Aerospace products including but not limited to Commercial and Military products
- Develop manufacturing processes for new and existing advanced ceramics in a lab environment
- Identify technology trends in advanced composites
- Collaborate with GE Aerospace's internal product departments, global R&D sites, and external and internal material developers
- Characterize and identify degradation modes and approaches for improving the lifetime of advanced composites in extreme environments
- Prepare research proposals for external funding
- Invent and patent when appropriate
- Deliver effective presentations, reports, and publications

Required Qualifications
- PhD in Materials Science and Engineering or related discipline or Master's degree in Materials Science and Engineering or related discipline with a minimum of three years of experience in a materials R&D environment.
- Experience in the development and testing of ceramic matrix composites or other advanced ceramic systems
- Demonstrated understanding of ceramic matrix composite development and processing
- Demonstrated understanding of ceramic matrix composite property-process-microstructure relationships
- Demonstrated ability to learn new areas of research
- Willing to work government funded programs
- US Citizenship is required
- Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.
- Must be 18 years or older.
Desired Characteristics
- Experience in material and process development for ceramic matrix composites, additive ceramics, or other advance ceramic systems with complex microstructure requirements at multiple length scales
- Experience in characterization and mechanical testing of ceramic matrix composites
- Experience working on government contracts and preparing proposals
- Experience with statistical analysis, data analytics, and statistical process control
- Experience with environmental barrier coatings (EBCs)
- Experience in a non-academic research environment
- Passion for hands on development and laboratory work
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced dynamic working environment
- Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems
- Demonstrated excellence in research through peer reviewed publications
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
The base pay range for this position is 80,000 - 150,000 USD Annually. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary. This posting is expected to close on May 01, 2025
