Job Description Summary

As a Research Scientist in the Materials Characterization group, you will work in the Microscopy area with a diverse team of scientists at GE Aerospace, predominantly using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), to determine composition/ structure/ property relationships of GE materials and develop novel characterization methods.

You will work with an energized team of scientists at GE Aerospace to develop analytical methods, characterize diverse materials, interpret and process data, and generate summary reports to support materials development and processing efforts.

  • Conduct basic and applied research related to the development of new materials systems, engineered materials, microstructures, and processes.
  • Work closely with project teams to plan and execute characterization for a variety of projects that may include metals, high temperature alloys, ceramics, thermal/environmental barrier coatings, and ceramic matrix composites.
  • Be responsible for operating and coordinating equipment maintenance on multiple pieces of equipment necessary to conduct experiments.
  • Reduce data to useful formats using appropriate mathematical techniques and software tools.
  • Maintain accurate records of the work performed and other records required by the projects.
  • Share project progress through oral presentations and written reports.
  • Foster a multidisciplinary and inclusive team environment.
  • Perform all work in accordance with EHS and compliance guidelines.
  • Stay informed on the latest microprobe (EPMA) techniques and trends.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree in material science, physics, geology, materials engineering, or related scientific discipline OR Master's degree in material science, physics, geology, materials engineering, or related scientific discipline with a minimum of 2 years of hands-on microscopy experience.
  • Demonstrated ability in advanced characterization techniques such as electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), wavelength dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office products like Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and stay on schedule for project deliverables.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills in a global team environment.
  • Ability to work across all functions/levels as part of a team.
  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY
  • US Citizenship is required

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience with programming languages (e.g., python, matlab)
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to interface with leadership and researchers with confidence and clarity.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results for multiple programs and material systems.
  • Fluent in technical terminology aspects of materials characterization.
  • Experience with a variety of different material systems.
  • Experience in other characterization techniques such as TEM, micro-CT, Optical Microscopy and Image Analysis.
  • Working knowledge of statistics.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

The base pay range for this position is 80,000 - 150,000 USD Annually. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary. This posting is expected to close on March 17, 2025
