Overview
Waters is looking for a Material Scientist to join our Global Research organization in Milford, Massachusetts. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a diverse team of scientists and engineers across the organization to lead research and development of next generation consumables for chromatographic separation and sample preparation of small molecules and biologicals to support the Company's consumables portfolio growth, exploring new particles for sample preparation and column technologies with a focus on micron-sized magnetic particle technologies.
Waters Global Research is committed to understanding customer needs and pivoting these insights into new and exciting technologies to address those needs. Members of Global Research work in cross-functional research teams that integrate across Liquid Chromatography, Mass Spectrometry, Clinical, Informatics, and Consumables technologies to develop novel system solutions for the critical problems of the life sciences. We interface with our business unit organizations and consumers to understand the problems that plague the industries and collaborate to drive ideas to solutions.

Responsibilities
- Conduct new Material Science research into silica, polymer, hybrid organic-inorganic, and magnetic particles for use in various sample prep and column-based workflows, including extraction, purification, and enrichment of small molecules, proteins, and oligonucleotides.
- Synthesize and functionalize chromatographic particles using advanced materials science techniques and surface chemistry methods to achieve desired properties and performance metrics.
- Conduct analytical characterization of synthesized materials, including particle size distribution, porosity and composition analysis, surface functionalization, and binding efficiency.
- Precisely document research findings and maintain research databases in a timely manner.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design materials tailored for specific analytical workflows and ensure compatibility with downstream applications.
- Stay current on literature in material science and magnetic particle technology and pursue intellectual property opportunities.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and conduct experiments within a chemical synthesis lab setting.
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
Qualifications
- Master's degree in Material Science with experience in the synthesis and characterization of micron-sized particles. Bachelor's degree with at least 2 years of relevant experience will also be equally considered.
- Understanding of separation science fundamentals, chromatography, and sample preparation approaches (manual and automated) is preferred.
- Looking for two or more of the following: (1) Synthesis of inorganic oxide materials, preferred silica with aligned or other unique porous properties; (2) Profound understanding of silica material synthesis techniques including sol-gel process, templated growth, hydrothermal treatment; (3) hybrid organic/inorganic material synthesis; (4) Synthesis of polymeric chromatographic and adsorptive materials in particulate or monolithic format; (5) Synthesis and characterization of of low-binding surfaces. (6) Surface modification of inorganic and organic particles.
- Motivated self-starter with strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently following high-level guidance and the ability to set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines.
- Willingness to learn different techniques, positive attitude, work well in a group environment.
- Strong English written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to people with different background.
