Job Description Summary

At Dowty - a GE Aerospace company, we design, manufacture, repair and overhaul a range of carbon fibre composite propeller systems for military and civil applications from our new state of the art headquarters facility in Brockworth, Gloucestershire, UK.

The successful applicant will be part of a small but growing CNC Manufacturing Engineering team. With a focus on improving production processes, leading problem solving and ensuring procedural compliance, you will help by programming a range of CNC lathes and mills, delivering a standardised approach and further developing tool and parameter control.

As a central figure in the manufacturing environment, you will work closely with a broad range of internal stakeholders across planning, operations, quality, and engineering to maintain fast paced manufacture of an airworthy product.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Contributing to a diverse, mixed skill-set team in a self-motivated, pragmatic manner to resolve manufacturing issues.
  • Keeping yourself, the wider team, and the business safe and compliant in all your daily tasks.
  • Creating and developing production techniques from raw material to finished product placing Safety, Quality, Delivery & Cost (SQDC) at the centre of all decisions.
  • Defining manufacturing processes, process specifications, tooling solutions and rework activities centred around CNC machining.
  • Online & offline creation of milling & turning NC programmes using a blend of Fanuc, Heidenhain, Catia V5, hyperMILL.
  • Online & offline prove-out and verification of new and existing programmes.
  • Identifying solutions and improvements then collaborate cross-functionally to deliver them through research, development, qualification and into production.
  • Striving to contribute and develop a modern ME function to enhance productivity & quality.
  • Presenting data driven solutions to manufacturing engineering problems following structured Lean and problem solving methodologies (Six Sigma, Red X, 8D, Lean).
  • Leading and supporting Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) activities across the business and represent the ME team in wider forums.
  • Providing technical support to operations teams.
  • Implementation of a Lean system and calculation of process standard times alongside creation of workshop standard operating procedures.
  • Supporting daily shop floor management escalation meetings, process escapes and shop floor queries.
  • This role will suit a diligent and tenacious team player who has a desire to develop and grow themselves.

Required Qualifications

  • A completed Manufacturing / Engineering Technician Apprenticeship (Level 3) or, demonstrated relevant experience in a relevant manufacturing environment.
  • Able to interpret 2D (legacy) drawings, technical specifications, and review manufacturability challenges and production solutions.
  • Solid understanding of Metrology principles such as, hand measurement, CMM contact measurement and non-contact vision measurement.
  • Have a wide knowledge of manufacturing techniques.
  • Experience with online programming of CNC milling & turning machine tools.
  • Understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).

Desired Characteristics

  • Experience with online programming of CNC machine tools with Fanuc and Heidenhain CNC controllers
  • Experience with offline programming of CNC machine tools using CATIA V5 / hyperMILL
  • Experience of programming and/or operating CMMs (ideally using Modus or PolyWorks software)
  • HNC in an Engineering discipline (Level 4)
