The Role
The Assistant Preparator will act as a steward for the thousands of artworks that come through the New England art storage hub each year as well as all artwork hanging in all US facilities. Work with Head Preparator to ensure that all shipments in and out of storage are securely packed to the highest museum standards, creating custom packaging when needed.
- Carry out solo or assist art installations and moves of varying complexity, following installation protocols to ensure consistency in quality, security, aesthetics, and collection care.
- Handle art (unwrap, display, wrap) during weekly frame specs meetings.
- Assist in day-to-day preparation tasks, helping to set schedules and long-term calendar planning for New England-based art projects.
- Work with curators to stage exhibition mock-ups and help problem solve complex and multimedia installations.
- Generate documentation for installation of artworks that are complex in nature, including multi-component works, new media works, and site-specific installations. Assist in generating installation instructions.
- Maintain all time-based media works in the collection and work collaboratively to plan for their technical installation.
- Assist in maintaining the art storage/collections care hubs.
- Drive the department art van to transport and pick up artworks as needed.
- Assist in maintenance of the team art van and book trucks and equipment as needed for larger works.
- Travel across all company regions, with concentration in New England.
The Expertise and Skills You Bring
- 3-5 years of experience handling fine art.
- Passionate about art, contemporary art knowledge a plus.
- Knowledge of current and best practices in all aspects of collection management and art museum standards.
- Technical acumen to generate high-quality professional mock-ups, renderings, or scale models a plus.
- Creative problem-solving ability, spatial and mechanical.
- Exhibit outstanding attention to detail and adhere stringently to deadlines while managing multiple deliverables, projects, and priorities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and post-production software, techniques, and standards including use of Adobe and other applicable editing tools.
- Excellent communication and people skills.
- Valid Driver's license.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Ability to climb ladders and work on scaffolding and mechanical lifts as needed.
- Standing or walking most of each day.
