Staff Software Engineer, Systems Engineering

Job Summary

Analyzes business requirements to determine feasibility of design within time and cost constraints. Designs software systems, test vendor provided HW/FW, understands, and manages server fleet.

This role is fully remote with a team distributed across multiple time zones and a strong presence in the US.

Responsibilities

  • Design and development of software networking features for Equinix Metal, a bare metal cloud that scales and provides a way to interconnect across the Equinix ecosystem


  • Work closely with the team and collaborate with cross functional teams to introduce and enhance our product capabilities for customers


  • Provide technical leadership for the team of highly passionate engineers to evolve our software networking features


  • Collaborate with others to develop software for our large-scale cloud services, driving simplicity, high-reliability, ease of maintenance and operation


  • Lead by example through direct contribution and provide direction in establishing development and operational standard methodologies. Be a team player. Coach less senior members of the team.


  • Actively participate in continuous improvement of process and systems that support our software development lifecycle (SDLC), values and culture

Qualifications

  • Experience with distributed systems at scale


  • Basic understanding of how networking works and how virtual defined networking works


  • Expertise with BIOS, BMCs, UEFI and PXE boot


  • Experience with Docker, QEMU/KVM, expertise in Linux


  • Experience with testing and qualifying software, firmware, and server hardware components for production use


  • Ability to identify problems (and subsequently drive resolution) for issues found in the interaction between Operating Systems and firmware/BIOS. To name a few: Windows, VMWare ESXi, Linux and Linux kernels, drivers, BIOS, and BMC firmware


  • Experience in a modern coding language like Go, Rust, or Ruby/Ruby on Rails.


  • Experience in creating fast feedback loops with CI/CD and testing automation


  • Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and other container services


  • Experience with Agile software development practices including Scrum, JIRA, Peer Review, Git and CI/CD


  • Deep analytical and problem-solving skills with a sense of curiosity


  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills internally and externally including the ability to document solutions and create architectural diagrams


  • Shown ability to think strategically and execute with a sense of urgency, delivering services to meet customer demands on a timely basis


  • Experience contributing to Open Source and interacting with Open-Source communities is a plus


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent with proven years of experience in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field of education

The United States targeted pay range for this position in the following location is / locations are:• San Francisco, CA / Bay Area: $128,000 to $211,000 per year• California (Non-SF/Bay Area), Connecticut, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Washington state: $119,000 to $196,000 per year• Colorado, Nevada, Rhode Island: $108,000 to $178,000 per yearOur pay ranges reflect the minimum and maximum target for new hire pay for the full-time position determined by role, level, and location. Individual pay is based on additional factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education and/or training.This position may be offered in other locations. Your recruiter can share more about the specific pay range for your preferred location during the hiring process.The targeted pay range listed reflects the base pay only and does not include bonus, equity, or benefits.
