Additionally, the position contributes to problem-solving and refinement in product design, with increasing complexity as experience is gained.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of product design experience, preferably within the engine subsystem domain.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the product development cycle.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Investigates field-based or Value Package Introduction (VPI) program team issues, understands causal mechanisms, recommends actions, and owns problem resolution from a design perspective.
  • Supports the execution of processes like Critical Design Decisions, System Design and Validation Checklist, and Design Review.
  • Utilizes tools such as iDFMEA, DVA, GD&T, CREO, and ANSYS Workbench to ensure high-quality component and subsystem design decision making.
  • Works with cross-functional technical experts and senior designers to communicate design intent through comprehensive Design Review packages to the Product Preceding Technology (PPT), VPI, or Value Package Change Request (VPCR) teams.
  • Facilitates design decisions on concept selection, optimization, and specifications impacting customers.
  • Leads problem resolution for complex components, systems, and subsystems, increasing in technical complexity over time.
  • Executes established processes independently while contributing to process improvement and technology/product knowledge development.
  • Engages with technicians or temporary student employees for coordination and direction of work.
  • Contributes to team goals, exhibits influence within the work group, and develops proficiency in key competency areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Competencies:

  • Cross-Functional Design Integration: Communicates design capability through an approved cross-functional design review, integrating stakeholder requirements.
  • Mechanical Design Modeling and Analysis: Creates CAD models for system design concepts and system-level analyses, such as Dimensional Variation Analysis and Finite Element Analysis.
  • Mechanical Design of Mechanical Systems: Applies deep understanding of mechanical systems, ensuring innovative design concepts meet Cummins' and customer expectations.
  • Mechanical Design Specification: Develops specifications in the form of models, bill of materials, and detailed drawings for manufacturing and inspection, adhering to industry and Cummins standards.
  • Product Problem Solving: Utilizes data-based problem-solving methods to resolve product issues and prevent recurrence.
  • Product Function Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis: Supports design decisions by interpreting computational tools to predict product capabilities.
  • Systems Thinking: Analyzes linkages and interactions within the system to predict behavior and improve the design's effectiveness.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BE Mechanical).
