Job Summary:
Cummins Research and Technology is seeking a Technical Adviser to research, prototype, and demonstrate innovative software and controls features with connected and intelligent algorithms. This role focuses on developing controls software features, health monitoring, and utilizing look-ahead and telematics data to optimize powertrain efficiency for fuel economy, reliability, and productivity. The Technical Adviser will collaborate with business units to integrate these solutions into production environments, ensuring a smooth transition from prototyping to marketplace. Key responsibilities include designing and prototyping next-generation software and controls, incorporating predictive and adaptive controls for powertrain optimization, developing health monitoring algorithms, and deploying machine learning algorithms. The role also involves collaborating with cross-functional teams and external partners, utilizing modern software development practices, providing technical leadership, and ensuring compliance with functional safety and cybersecurity standards.

Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Engineering (Electrical, Computer, Mechanical) with 5+ years of relevant industry experience, or Master's degree with 10+ years of experience.
- Proven track record in embedded controls, real-time software development, connectivity (telematics or V2X), or machine learning/AI integration.
- Expertise in controls software or health monitoring and diagnostics feature development.
- Background in engine, hybrid, or EV powertrain systems, powertrain controls, or health monitoring.
- Proficiency in modeling and simulation in Matlab, software development and prototyping through MIL/SIL/HIL and truck testing, and advanced controls and machine learning.
- Ability to prototype quickly, iterate on solutions, and adapt to changing technological or market requirements.
- Skilled at mentoring multidisciplinary teams and effectively communicating complex ideas to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Preferred certifications in Machine Learning/AI, DevOps/Model Based Software Development, Functional Safety (FuSa)/Cybersecurity, and Containers (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes), APIs, microservices, or related toolchains.
In this role you will make an impact in the following ways:
- Design and prototype next generation connected software and controls features for ICE, hybrid and battery electric powertrains in medium and heavy duty vehicle applications.
- Incorporate look-ahead and operation data for optimizing powertrain efficiency, reliability and productivity using predictive and adaptive controls and connected software solutions.
- Deploy embedded optimization or machine learning algorithms to enhance efficiency, reliability, and system intelligence.
- Develop health monitoring algorithms for engines, hybrids, or BEV powertrain and components, leveraging telematics data, analytics and machine learning for remote diagnostics, prognostics, and predictive maintenance.
- Utilize modern software development practices (containers, APIs, microservices) to improve the modularity, scalability, and maintainability of solutions.
- Oversee the full software development lifecycle, from initial concept and architecture through testing, validation, and deployment.
- Champion best practices in Functional Safety (FuSa) and cybersecurity, ensuring robust, secure architectures for connected systems.
- Conduct risk assessments and maintain compliance with relevant industry regulations and standards.
- Conduct rapid experimentation and proof-of-concept development to validate value and feasibility.
- Create, manage, improve, and apply electronic application and systems development processes and tools, including system specification, modeling and simulation, calibration, DVP&R, and troubleshooting.
- Apply tools for simulation, calibration, and product life maintenance.
- Use systems knowledge and expertise to make decisions in the areas of electronic and electrical software systems, requirements, calibration, and test that impact the quality and performance of calibrated builds and management of cross-BU integration and coordination.
- Collaborate closely with business units and cross-functional teams—product managers/TPLs, system architects, system integration, system engineering, functional safety, cybersecurity, CCS and data scientists—to transition prototypes into scalable, production-ready solutions.
- Collaborate with external partners and suppliers including national labs, academia and engineering service providers as needed to prototype and explore emerging technologies.
- Deliver independent execution of established and emerging work processes and systems, while still developing technology or product knowledge.

- Coach and develop the next generation of technical experts, Review work of less-experienced developers/testers to ensure robust, reusable, and efficient design.
- Generates IP and manages execution of IP and non-disclosure agreements during project execution.
- Application of Mechatronics Systems:
- Specify electronic hardware and interconnections that measure and control systems.
- Apply electronic hardware and interconnections in Cummins' products to ensure accurate measurement and control.
- Machine Integration and Optimization:
- Combine various parts or sub-systems into a cohesive whole to achieve the desired output for the customer.
- Apply Cummins' installation requirements using standard tools, processes, and best practices to optimize performance, reliability, cost, and quality.
- Analyze technical issues using proven problem-solving and troubleshooting techniques for rapid resolution.
- Product Function Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis :
- Utilize and interpret computational tools and methods to predict the capability of a product's function relative to its system, sub-system, and component level requirements.
- Impact product design decisions through modeling, simulation, and analysis.
- Product Problem Solving:
- Solve product problems using a structured process that protects the customer.
- Determine the assignable cause and implement robust, data-based solutions.
- Identify systemic root causes and recommend actions to prevent problem recurrence.
- System Requirements Engineering:
- Use appropriate methods and tools to translate stakeholder needs into verifiable requirements.
- Establish acceptance criteria for the system through analysis, allocation, and negotiation.
- Track the status of requirements throughout the system lifecycle.
- Assess the impact of changes to system requirements on project scope, schedule, and resources.

- Education, Licenses, Certifications:
- College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.
- Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.
- This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
- Experience:
- Prior Technical Specialist/Specialist Engineering equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving, quality decision making and providing technical direction and leadership to a project team(s). Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred
