DESCRIPTION
Cummins Research and Technology is seeking a Technical Specialist to develop, prototype, and demonstrate innovative digital software and controls features with connected and intelligent algorithms. In this role, you'll focus on controls software feature development, health monitoring, and the use of look-ahead and telematics data to optimize powertrain efficiency for fuel economy, reliability and productivity. This includes ICE, hybrid or BEV powertrain of medium and heavy duty vehicles. You'll also collaborate with business units to integrate these solutions into production environments, ensuring a smooth transition from prototyping/PPT to marketplace.

- Ph.D. in Engineering (e.g., Electrical, Computer, Mechanical) with 3 years of relevant experience, or Master's degree with 5 years of industry experience.
- Proven track record in embedded controls, real-time software development, or machine learning/AI applications.
- Background in controls software or health monitoring and diagnostics feature development for ICE, hybrid, EV powertrain.
- Background in Engine, hybrid, or BEV powertrain systems, modeling and simulation in Matlab, model based controls development, and software development and prototyping through MIL/SIL/HIL and vehicle testing.
- Background in advanced controls and machine learning algorithms and applications is highly desired.
- Skilled in communication, presentation, documentation and teamwork.
- Desired to have certification in FUSA, CyberApps, MISRA, Model-Based Controls Development, DevOps, or Machine Learning.
In this role you will make an impact in the following ways:
- Designs and prototypes next-generation powertrain software connected digital features and controls algorithms for engine, hybrid and BEV applications in medium and heavy duty vehicles.
- Conducts rapid experimentation and proof-of-concept development to validate value and feasibility.
- Deploys embedded optimization or machine learning algorithms to enhance efficiency, reliability, and uptime e.g. predictive energy management for hybrid, SOH/RUL for battery or fault prediction for engine.
- Leads the development and improvement of work processes and systems across connected and intelligent functional discipline within R&T.
- Collaborates closely with business units and cross-functional teams—product managers/TPLs, system architects, system integration, FUSA, cybersecurity, CCS and data scientists—to transition prototypes into scalable, production-ready solutions.
- Collaborates with external partners and suppliers including national labs, academia and engineering service providers as needed to prototype and explore new software algorithms features and technology integration from V2X connectivity, vehicle automation (ADAS or autonomous), and fleet decarbonization eco-system.
RESPONSIBILITIES
To be successful in this role you will need the following:
Design and Application of Mechatronics Systems:
- Specify electronic hardware and interconnections that measure and control systems.
- Apply electronic hardware and interconnections in Cummins' products to ensure accurate measurement and control.
Machine Integration and Optimization:
- Combine various parts or sub-systems into a cohesive whole to achieve the desired output for the customer.
- Apply Cummins' installation requirements using standard tools, processes, and best practices to optimize performance, reliability, cost, and quality.
- Analyze technical issues using proven problem-solving and troubleshooting techniques for rapid resolution.
Product Function Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis:
- Utilize and interpret computational tools and methods to predict the capability of a product's function relative to its system, sub-system, and component level requirements.
- Impact product design decisions through modeling, simulation, and analysis.
Product Problem Solving:
- Solve product problems using a structured process that protects the customer.
- Determine the assignable cause and implement robust, data-based solutions.
- Identify systemic root causes and recommend actions to prevent problem recurrence.
System Requirements Engineering:
- Use appropriate methods and tools to translate stakeholder needs into verifiable requirements.
- Establish acceptance criteria for the system through analysis, allocation, and negotiation.
- Track the status of requirements throughout the system lifecycle.
- Assess the impact of changes to system requirements on project scope, schedule, and resources.
- Create and maintain information linkages to related artifacts.

Design and Application of Open/Closed Loop Controls:
- Specify software features that interact with mechanical, hydraulic, chemical, and electronic systems to deliver desired system states.
- Specify control system architectures, including appropriate measurements, correct actuation, and algorithms for Cummins' products.

Education, Licenses, Certifications:
- College, university, or equivalent bachelor's degree in engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.
- Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.
- This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
Experience:
- Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making. Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred
