Agency Description
The Philadelphia Water Department is a municipal department of approximately 2500 employees working in all facets to provide water/wastewater treatment services to the City of Philadelphia and the surrounding counties.
The PWD Industrial Waste Unit (IWU) protects the City’s freshwater resources and wastewater treatment plants by enforcing local, state, and federal regulations governing wastewater discharges to the City’s wastewater and stormwater collection systems.
Job Description
Students are employed as engineering assistants for the Industrial Waste Engineering Support Program in PWD's Industrial Waste & Backflow Compliance Unit. The group implements the pretreatment program by enforcing the regulations to protect the wastewater and stormwater infrastructure. The co-op will be responsible for the performance of various tasks and will assist advanced level engineers, supervisors or field staff in assignments related to the implementation of the Pretreatment Program and regulatory enforcement of the Clean Water Act. Some responsibilities include: • Assist in researching regulatory (local, state or federal) topics that impact the pretreatment program • Assist with drafting evaluations on the effects of industrial wastes on water and wastewater treatment operations • Assist engineers in visiting industrial facilities to inspect their processes and evaluate wastewater generation and treatment • Assist in reviewing chemicals and physical properties of waste generated in various types of industries • Assist in reviewing groundwater and wastewater pretreatment technologies • Assist in drafting reports and permits • Assist in reviewing regulatory compliance for enforcements and draft enforcement letters • Assist in compiling, analyzing, updating, tracking and interpreting data collected from field locations or from our database and performing calculations • Assist in maintaining proper documentation of events • Assist in communicating with customers on the various programs • Any other assignments that may assist with the implementation of the Pretreatment Program
