Your opportunity

The Financial and Regulatory Reporting Team function within Schwab Asset Management (SAM) is responsible for oversight of the following functions with respect to the proprietary mutual funds and exchange-traded funds and bank collective trust funds: Daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, semiannual and annual oversight of shareholder reporting and regulatory reporting. The Financial and Regulatory Reporting Team is looking for a Director to lead an experienced team of managers by providing guidance and mentoring during the delivery of their job duties. The Director in this position will report to the Director of the Financial and Regulatory Reporting Team. This will be a people leader role, you will play a key role in ensuring that all filings are made timely and accurate through leading reporting cycles, answering internal and external inquiries, authorizing shareholder reports and regulatory filings, and supporting the lead effort on accounting and reporting policies including competitor research and ensuring for best practices while leading a team that reports directly to you.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Oversight and review of the funds semiannual and annual shareholder reports and holdings and financial statements and quarterly statements of portfolio holdings, while ensuring that all regulatory and disclosure requirements have been met
  • Reviewing regulatory filings, including U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Forms N-CSR, N-CEN, N-1A, N-MFP, N-PORT, 24F-2, N-14, and 17f-2 filings
  • Strategic involvement of oversight of third-party fund administrators' preparation of shareholder reports and regulatory filings and subsequently assess and communicate their performance each reporting cycle
  • Acting as a liaison between financial statement technology vendor, independent auditor, and financial and regulatory reporting administrator, ensuring all partners meet timelines with accuracy and timeliness
  • Leading shareholder reports team in completion of work for assigned reporting cycles
  • Coordinating schedules with internal and external partners, moderating weekly management meetings with financial reporting team, external auditors, reviewing team's work and training team on proper review techniques and implementation of new reporting standards
  • Playing a key role in identifying and implementing process improvements and lead in interactions with external and internal partners
  • Partnering with all functional areas of SAM to provide expertise on financial and regulatory reporting standards as inquiries arise during reporting cycles
  • Staying abreast of regulatory changes and implement internal policy updates on a go forward basis by working with fund administration partners and senior management
  • Deep knowledge in U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and SEC Regulation S-X and all SEC Form Instructions
  • Support Director in new product initiatives and other special projects
  • Communicating and presenting to senior management in SAM on financial and regulatory standards and process on a frequent basis, including interaction with the Schwab Fund Complex Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer, Chief Operating Officer and President and Chief Executive Officer

What you have

  • Bachelor's degree required (Bachelor of Science in Accounting preferred)
  • Minimum fifteen years of direct experience administering mutual funds and exchange-traded funds, including knowledge in financial reporting and a general understanding of fund accounting, tax, custody, and transfer agency teams
  • Experience with working with senior leaders, independent auditors, and people leading including frequent 1:1 meetings, mentorship and development, and annual performance reviews
  • Experience in collaborating, writing, and reviewing departmental policies and procedures in application of applying regulatory reporting in compliance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and SEC Regulation S-X and all SEC Form Instructions
  • Knowledge of mutual funds and exchanged-traded shareholder reporting and regulatory filings
  • Knowledge of calculation of net asset value
  • Strong project management, vendor management and research skills
  • Ability to plan, organize and lead a team effectively
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills
  • Strong people skills
