Who we are looking for:
The Senior Technology Manager's primary responsibility is to partner with their business areas and provide technology solutions and services that help deliver CarMax's strategic mission and plans. This position will direct and manage the strategic planning, software development, implementation, administration and maintenance for a large suite of application systems.
This includes development of long and short-term technology solutions that address business goals and deliver improved profitability, efficiency and an unrivaled associate experience.
Position Requirements:
Strategic planning and results focus
- Develop, publish, and track progress towards the technology roadmap for your teams
- Identify, set, and measure towards the appropriate technology goals for the teams
- Prioritize objectives and provide a holistic approach to solution recommendations that includes ROI, time to market, scalability as well as alternative recommendations
Communication
- Partner with business stakeholders, peer groups, solution and enterprise architects, the technology management team and key associates.
- Communicate the vision to executive leadership while also providing guidance for the team to support and feel ownership of the strategic direction.
Team Leadership and Development
- Attract, recruit, retain and coach a strong team of skilled and engaged associates aligned to the overall mission.
- Be a coach of your team. Create clear role expectations and develop associates to reach their full potential - understand their goals and needs, partner in their development, provide advice, feedback, training and advocacy in our associate-first culture
Technology
- Continue to grow one's knowledge base and stay current with industry trends while also formulating a technology plan for each business area based on in-depth understanding of the current business needs and their future direction.
- Drive adoption and advancement of a DevOps culture within your teams, focusing on continuous improvement and innovation within your organization, allowing our teams to build, test, deploy, and learn as quickly, safely, and happily as possible.
- Ensure that production problems and errors are tracked to ensure appropriate handling.
- Lead incident reporting to include postmortems which involves prioritizing enhancements to reduce ongoing support; scheduling support rotations; ensuring that the ticket queues are appropriately managed; and assisting with critical outages at any time.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
- BS/BA degree - Technology related, preferred
- 7+ years of experience in Technology with 5+ years of application systems development and implementation
- 3+ years' experience managing direct reports
- 3+ years of experience required leading software projects leveraging Agile practices, required
- Product team experience preferred
Work Location and Arrangement: This role will be based out of the Richmond, VA CarMax Technology Innovation Center or the Dallas, TX Technology Hub and have a Hybrid work arrangement.
Work Authorization: Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
