Senior Director, Design, Travel

The Premium Design team sets the bar for Capital One's high-spender customer experience ecosystem, revolving around highly useful, personalized, and high-stakes products. We are currently seeking a Sr. Director, Design, Travel to lead our most prominent and fastest growing benefits vertical for both consumers and businesses. You will lead an established product design team across research, UX, UI, design strategy and design operations, accountable for both web and native mobile products.

As Sr. Director Design, Travel you will also operate as a strategic leader at the intersection of business, customer, associate experience to uncover and define compelling forward-looking product design trends and investment areas. You'll do it all in a collaborative environment that encourages you to build relationships, take on new responsibility, and promotes continuous learning. You'll work on established products, nascent products, and completely new products not yet delivered to customers.

What You'll Do:

  • Set and maintain bar for product design rigor in Travel, and partner with other leaders to elevate that of Premium Design
  • Measure and communicate how experience design drives business results and help our partners imagine the possibilities
  • Provide leadership and connect dots across our horizontal teams, focusing on strategic projects, customer insights, quality, and design operations
  • Build and lead a dedicated team to identifying and executing highest leverage strategic projects across Premium
  • Lead cross-functional engagements with Experience Strategists, Researchers, Operations team members on large scale efforts
  • Devise organizational structures that optimally leverage internal expertise and market intelligence to maximize design impact
  • Craft compelling stories grounded in rigorous insights and analysis to influence senior and executive partners across the company
  • Lead designers and non-designers on cross-functional project teams to understand and apply research findings by framing problems, defining insights, and designing new methodologies and practices to serve customer needs
  • Manage internal stakeholder and partner relationships
  • Embrace and advocate an experience mindset with our teams and partners - this is as important to the work as the results
  • Manage and coach high potential associates, including actively crafting a vision for their roles and their success
  • Effectively work with partners and teams across various geographies
  • Resiliently lead teams through change

Our ideal candidate will have the following experience and skills:

  • Experience designing and leading travel or lifestyle software products
  • Experience in complex product ecosystems that solve needs for many different customer types at scale
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in grounding and communicating design decisions and strategies in the context of both the business and user - communicating analysis, customer trends, opportunity, and business impact grounded in insights
  • Experience in leading a portfolio of work bringing emerging opportunities to market
  • Experience in leading strategic and horizontal teams within a product design space
  • Exceptional people management and development skills
  • Exceptional workshop and meeting facilitation skills
  • Fantastic interpersonal skills, with experience influencing senior decision making
  • Experience with working in design innovation environments

Basic Qualifications

  • At least 12 years professional experience in design

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree or advanced Degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Design, Behavioral Science, or related field
  • 10+ years experience in a leadership role leading Customer Experience, Product Design, Research, or Design Operations teams

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

New York City (Hybrid On-Site): $272,600 - $311,200 for Sr. Director, Design

San Francisco and San Jose, California (Hybrid On-Site): $288,800 - $329,600 for Sr. Director, Design

Illinois (Hybrid On-Site): $254,100 - $290,000 for Sr. Director, Design

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
