We're seeking a future team member for the role of Stewardship Analyst and Client Manager to join our Investment team. This role is located in Tokyo, Japan - HYBRID

The stewardship analyst will play an important role in delivering Newton's commitments to investor stewardship; ensuring that not only are client and regulatory requirements met but also stewardship activities are embedded further into Newton's investment process.

Contribute to developing Newton Japan's business to existing and prospective clients by closely communicating with BNY Investment management Japan, EMEA and Newton IM. This role also involves retention and servicing of existing clients.

In this role, you'll make an impact in the following ways:

Stewardship analyst
  • Conduct engagement with investee companies and also work alongside analysts and portfolio managers when determining and acting on engagement priorities.
  • Support proxy voting process such that the active decisions taken are in line with Newton's voting policy, support investment expectations, capture any engagement activity and are aligned with evolving best practices and regulations.
  • Contribute to the evolution of Newton's approach to stewardship and investment considerations of corporate governance matters.
  • Ensure stewardship activities are accurately and consistently recorded.
  • Work with relevant business stakeholders to drive and evolve the reporting of Newton's stewardship activities.
  • Facilitate Stewardship related internal meetings such as Stewardship working group.
  • Work closely with members of Newton's responsible investment team and wider investment team.
  • Liaise with dealing, business development, marketing and other areas of the business as required.
Client manager
  • Work with the BNY sales team and NIM product team to attend client meetings, ensuring consistency and accuracy of information, messaging and positioning of meetings
  • Contributing to the client retention and cross-selling to existing clients to grow assets for the NIMJ business
  • Build strong relationships and deliver excellent service to NIMJ clients
  • Attend sales pitches (where appropriate)
  • In conjunction with the BNY sales team, maintain strong servicing relationships with clients at a level appropriate to AUM and future potential
  • Regular reporting to management and to wider team regarding client messaging and interaction
  • Provide input into product development process
  • Interacting with marketing to ensure consistency of message, including input into RFPs and quality control on all communications to consultants
  • Working closely with a broad set of Newton teams and BNYM employees; including, but not limited to, investment, compliance, performance and investment risk
  • Input on fees and prioritisation of new business opportunities
Contribute to presentations and materials for existing and prospective clientsTo be successful in this role, we're seeking the following:
  • A strong command of the issues and opportunities surrounding stewardship across multiple asset classes.
  • An appreciation for ESG factors in the context of an investor.
  • Effective collaborative engagement.
  • An understanding of active and thematic investment.
  • Good working understanding of Japanese equity products.
  • Appropriate level of written and oral communication skills, coupled with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Collaborative team player, have the ability to use own initiative, and to influence and persuade at a high level both internally and externally.
  • Results-focused and have the potential to successfully deliver in this role, possessing strong communication and relationship building skills with a view to career development
  • Japanese speaking and writing skills and fluency in English
  • A CMA、a CESGA or a CFA preferred
