The Operations & Systems Improvement (OSI) Team is looking for an Industrial Engineer intern to collaborate with in our efforts to identify and eliminate waste, streamline processes, and drive productivity throughout the organization.
The OSI team is involved with analyzing existing operational processes, identifying areas of improvement, and developing and implementing solutions to optimize operational performance and times. Team members are problem-solvers with strong analytical skills, who are able to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to drive positive change. Additionally, the team leverages the understanding and application of Lean Six Sigma principles and tools to champion change at the operational level.

Position Description
- Data Collection & Analysis: Collect and analyze operational data to identify trends, performance issues, and areas for optimization using tools like process maps, OEE / RTE analysis.
- Process Optimization: Assist in analyzing current production processes, identifying bottlenecks, and proposing solutions to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and increase productivity.
- Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams: Work closely with production, quality, supply chain, and engineering teams to identify and address operational challenges, map current processes, and define standard times.
- Knowledge Management: Assist in the preparation of reports and presentations that summarize findings, recommendations, and the impact of improvements on operational efficiency and cost reduction. Assist in maintaining a repository of operational data.
- Data Reporting: Assist in the preparation of reports and presentations that summarize findings, recommendations, and the impact of improvements on operational efficiency and cost reduction.
- Training Support: Support training initiatives for manufacturing personnel on process improvements, new procedures, or new equipment setups.
Example internship projects may include:
- Data collection and statistical analysis of an operation to identify bottlenecks, waste, opportunities, and standard times.
- Create/improve repository for global operational data, such as value stream maps, standard work/times, throughput/capacity & workforce models.
- Create workforce model for an operational area using operation data to enable efficient use of resources, adaptable workload planning, and increased throughput.
Qualifications
- Strong interest in industrial engineering principles and methodologies
- Analytical skills with proficiency in data collection, analysis, and the use of Microsoft Excel (knowledge of advanced Excel functions or other analysis software is a plus).
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to collaborate effectively with teams across different functions.
- Interest in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry with a desire to work within a team environment focused on learning and teaching.
Preferred Skills (optional):
- Familiarity with lean tools such as 5S, Kaizen, and Value Stream Mapping.
- Knowledge of Lean Six Sigma methodologies such as 5S, Kaizen, and Value Stream Mapping.
- Previous internship or project experience in a manufacturing or industrial engineering setting is a plus.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to collaborate effectively with teams across different functions.
To participate in the Biogen Internship Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
- At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date
- Be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
Education:
- Enrolled in a degree program in Engineering, Biotechnology, or Data Analytics
- Experience with industrial engineering a plus
