Head of EHS, RTP Pharma

About This Role:
As the Head of EHS at our RTP Pharma facility, you will lead the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) function and work collaboratively to ensure suitable systems and programs are in place to maintain compliance, mitigate risk, drive performance and promote a positive EHS culture.

Reporting to the Global EHS organization, this position is a member of the RTP Pharma site leadership team and provides a wide range of EHS support to promote global and site EHS programs while partnering with site leadership on EHS matters. 

The Head of EHS has overall responsibility for the effective implementation of Biogen’s EHS Management System at site level, ensuring compliance with applicable external regulatory requirements (i.e., OSHA, RCRA, etc.) and site permits (air, wastewater, stormwater, etc.). In this key role, your insights and guidance will be instrumental in steering RTP Pharma towards best-in-class EHS performance, ensuring our operations meet the expectations of our stakeholders.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead the development and implementation of EHS programs, ensuring compliance and promoting a culture of safety and environmental stewardship.
  • Partner with site leadership to interpret EHS obligations, analyze potential impacts, and communicate critical EHS issues to both site and global leadership.
  • Provide guidance on complex EHS matters, spearhead risk management initiatives, and facilitate the sharing of best practices across the organization.
  • Oversee the professional growth of EHS personnel, fostering a team environment and enabling each member to succeed.
  • Work collaboratively with various departments to set EHS and achieve goals and objectives. 
  • Manage EHS financial planning, ensuring resources are allocated effectively to support EHS initiatives and address potential risks.
  • Coordinate emergency planning efforts to minimize the impact on employees, facilities, community, and the environment.
  • Oversee hazardous, non-hazardous, and biohazardous waste management, including compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

Who You Are:
You are an experienced EHS leader with a strong technical background and a track record of successful program implementation. Your communication skills are exemplary, allowing you to translate complex EHS concepts to diverse audiences effectively. You possess a strategic mindset, with the acumen to navigate a dynamic environment and drive results through innovative solutions. Collaborative in nature, you engage effortlessly with cross-functional teams and build consensus on EHS priorities. You are adaptable, always ready to tackle new challenges and pivot as priorities evolve. Above all, you embody a sense of ownership for the well-being of your colleagues and the environment.

Required Skills:

  • BS/BA in engineering, safety, industrial hygiene, environmental science, life science, or related technical discipline (MS preferred).
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in EHS, with at least 5 years in a leadership capacity.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of EHS Management Systems and relevant legislation, with familiarity with ISO 14001 and 45001 standards.
  • Previous EHS experience in the pharmaceutical, biopharma, or related industry.
  • Familiarity with PSM requirements.
  • Expertise in environmental programs, particularly hazardous waste management.
  • Proficiency in engaging with regulatory authorities, auditors, and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with both cross-functional teams and senior leadership.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in using data and analytics for informed decision-making and program enhancement.
  • Results-oriented with exceptional problem-solving skills and a strategic approach to EHS challenges.
  • Adaptability in a fast-paced and changing environment.

Preferred Skills:

  • Professional EHS certification (e.g., CIH, CSP) highly desirable.
  • Advanced leadership and project management capabilities.
  • Proven success in developing and mentoring EHS teams.
  • Innovative approach to EHS with a commitment to continuous improvement.
