Reporting: The VP Program & Portfolio Management (PMO), DS will report functionally to the VP R&D Diagnostic Solutions (DS), Padraig FitzGerald who is a direct report into BD's EVP & CTO, Beth McCombs.

BD Life Sciences is advancing the world of health™ "from Discovery to Diagnostics and Beyond" by investing in transformative solutions around smart, connected, end-to-end workflows and collection and diagnostics at new care settings, which will improve the diagnosis and treatment of chronic conditions and diseases. Our segment includes three business units:
Biosciences (BDB): Biosciences is built around our flow cytometry franchise, which now extends into single cell genomics. It is driving a deeper understanding of the human immune system and helping our customers unlock its power to fight life threatening diseases, including HIV and cancer.
Specimen Management (SM): Vison - Lead diagnostic collection and care for customers and patients around the world, transforming the preanalytical pathway.
Diagnostic Solutions (DS): comprises our microbiology, point of care and molecular diagnostics businesses. We are focused on developing and delivering transformative, end-to-end solutions, ensuring our customers' success in achieving improved laboratory performance and impacting clinical outcomes.
Role Summary:
The VP of PMO DS will be responsible for establishing, maintaining, and improving project & portfolio management practices across the Diagnostic Solutions (DS) organization. This role will work closely with executive leadership to ensure projects are on track/resourced and identify potential roadblocks early on in the process. The VP of PMO will also oversee the implementation of new technologies related to program management and provide training and support to project managers throughout the business. The role reports to the VP R&D, Diagnostic Solutions (DS).
Location: This role is hybrid and must be based in Sparks, Maryland. At BD, hybrid means a minimum of four days a week in office. (Relocation assistance may be provided.)
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement the overall strategy for the PMO, ensuring alignment with the company's vision and goals. Understand the broader business strategy to ensure that project initiatives contribute to these objectives while fostering a culture of excellence and accountability. Stay updated with industry trends and best practices to ensure effective and efficient processes are in place.
- Portfolio Management: Oversee the entire R&D portfolio, leading teams managing our Molecular, Microbiology, and Point of Care platform portfolios. Lead Annual Strategic Review (ASR) process. Ensure programs are prioritized and resources are allocated effectively. Maintain program predictability and progress through constructive challenges and functional excellence reviews.
- Resource & Budget Management: Manage a $150 million R&D budget, ensuring optimal allocation and utilization of funds. Oversee an effective resource management process, ensuring that the right people, tools, and budget are allocated to projects. Removing bottlenecks and ensuring that projects have what they need to progress smoothly.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Partner with Business Unit leadership, R&D teams, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment and effective communication.
- Risk Management: Identify and mitigate risks associated with the R&D portfolio, ensuring predictable delivery of projects in line with business priorities.
- Performance Monitoring: Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs), delivering regular status updates to track the progress and success of projects. Identify potential issues early and take corrective actions to keep projects on track.
- Team Leadership: Lead, develop and mentor a team of program and portfolio managers, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Science, Engineering, Business Administration or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Minimum 10 years of experience in program management, preferably within the medical device / life sciences industry.
- Proven track record of leading successful projects, demonstrating strong leadership and influencing skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with the ability to think strategically and make sound decisions under pressure.
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, prioritize tasks, and meet tight deadlines.
- Proficiency in project and resource management software and tools, such as Microsoft Project, OnePlan, etc.
- Knowledge of Agile methodologies and Scrum principles is desirable.
- Certification in Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent is advantageous.
