Job Description Summary
The EHS Specialist will prepare and/or assist in preparing policies and procedures in Environmental Health and Safety. The EHS Specialist will have extensive knowledge in licensing and permitting for a manufacturing and R&D laboratory environment. This individual will be the Subject Matter Expert on most issues involving Environmental Compliance, Health and Safety regulation, and Workers' Compensation. They will work on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors necessary to select appropriate methods and techniques for obtaining satisfactory solutions. Performs routine tasks with little instruction and supervision, and general instruction on new assignments. This position will work closely with both senior internal and external personnel.

Essential / Key Job Responsibilities (including supervisory and/or fiscal):
- Develop, implement and oversee all site safety, health and environmental programs to ensure Federal and State, Local compliance.
- Track and report EHS performance metrics to BU Operations leaders; Engages site level leadership teams on EHS matters to ensure a strong culture of associate safety and environmental management.
- Conduct root cause investigations into accidents and work-related injuries or illnesses. Utilize data provided from the OSHA 300 Logs, Workers' Compensation trends and Safety Alerts (both locally and BD wide) to identify trends. Identify Industry Best Practices and establish creative ways to reduce injuries sitewide.
- Act as liaison to associates needing ergonomic evaluations. Coordinate or conduct ergonomic evaluations and make improvement recommendations
- Coordinate all EHS Training Programs. Create and deliver effective training content to meet BD and regulatory requirements.
- Work with Human Resources to oversee insurance carriers, medical providers to maintain injury management, Workers Compensation and employee health programs.
- Maintain the site chemical inventory and oversee the SDS management system. Manage the chemical approval process.
- Chair Safety Committees and successfully continue forward with all Health and Safety Initiatives.
- Conduct regulatory evaluations, write reports as required, and report activities to EHS Manager.
- Maintain applicable site environmental permits which may include Stormwater Pollution Prevention, air permit, wastewater permit, EPA RCRA Registration. Manage environmental liability and ensure waste disposal sites are audited and approved per BD requirements. Track environmental performance with a focus on sustainable improvements.
- Coordinate routine site inspections of all departments, document results and follow-up actions. Communicate results to Management.
- Manage all aspects of the Bloodborne Pathogen Program including coordinating the Hepatitis B vaccine and Tetanus vaccine programs and all training requirements. Coordinate medical monitoring, when required.
- Conduct risk assessments to ensure that all processes have been evaluated and documented and actions are identified to reduce the risk to an acceptable level based on the BD Risk Assessment. Conduct and document PPE Assessments.
- Performs other related duties and assignments as required.
Required Qualifications:
- Familiar with OSHA, EPA, RCRA, Air Quality, and Water Pollution regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to organize work and establish priorities.
- Effective customer service skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and time pressures.
- Effective interpersonal skills.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to create policies and procedures.
- Effective analytical problem solving skills.
- Must be proficient working with PCs. Requires good command of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail and the Internet.
Education and/or Experience:
- BS/BA in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health Science or a related discipline and 5 years or more related experience working in a research or manufacturing environment with safety and environmental responsibilities.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) preferred.
- Prior experience problem-solving ergonomic safety concerns and conducting ergonomic evaluations in different work settings (office, lab, manual materials handling) is required.
- Prior experience implementing or sustaining EHS management systems.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use sight, and use hands to manipulate, handle or feel objects, tools, controls, and office equipment. The employee frequently is required to verbally communicate with other associates. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel or crouch.
Work Environment:
