As Zendesk expands its software engineering team, we're seeking a seasoned PHP Software Engineer who will play a crucial role in driving our backend processes and products to new heights.
Operating on a global scale with over 130,000 customers, Zendesk leverages a vast suite of technologies in a large-scale distributed system. Our tech stack includes PHP, Laravel, Swoole, Docker, CI/CD, AWS, MySQL, Kafka, and unit tests, framed within agile scrum methodologies and Restful, event-driven architectures. Experience with Clickhouse is viewed as a bonus.
What You'll Be Doing?
As a Senior Software Engineer, your duties will include:
- Writing, testing, reviewing, and maintaining high-quality code for a system used by millions worldwide.
- Driving the full SDLC - from ideation to delivery - for projects involving multiple developers and complex requirements.
- Leading squad-based initiatives, influencing technical decision-making, and driving work that affects complex systems and mission-critical areas.
- Collaborating extensively with product team members and customer-facing teams to accurately identify requirements and customer needs.
- Tackling tech debt head-on, strategizing to break down complex tasks into manageable components, and leading by example through insightful, comprehensive code reviews.
- Monitoring and optimizing system performance, scalability, and reliability, setting a high standard for code quality and maintainability.
- Participating actively in the hiring process to attract top talent to Zendesk.

What Would You Bring to the Team?
Ideal candidates should have:
- 5+ years of professional experience with PHP, Laravel, or similar programming languages.
- Proven experience with PHP, Laravel, Docker, CI/CD, AWS, PostgreSQL, MySQL, PHPUnit & Codeception, Agile Scrum, Restful.
- Desired experience with Kafka, clean & event-driven architectures.
- Experience with Clickhouse, Swoole, Laravel Octane is a bonus.
- In-depth understanding of programming best practices, distributed system concepts (eventual consistency, timeouts, partitioning, circuit breaking, etc.), and the SDLC.
- Exceptional communication skills - you can clearly express your ideas and actively listen to others.
- Adaptability and an open mind - you excel in managing changes.
- A passion for learning, mentoring other engineers, and driving continuous improvement.

Hybrid: In this role, our hybrid experience is designed at the team level to give you a rich onsite experience packed with connection, collaboration, learning, and celebration - while also giving you flexibility to work remotely for part of the week. This role must attend our local office for part of the week. The specific in-office schedule is to be determined by the hiring manager.
