The Job

CNN is building its next generation CMS platform that is built from the ground up to be cloud native. The project spans the breadth of engineering disciplines from tuning globally available databases to immersive front-end user experiences. The CMS will be used to power all of CNN's journalism around the world as well as all a hub for new products.

We are looking for engineers who are comfortable across the stack and interested in solving unique and challenging problems - particularly those who are excited about building and deploying applications at the edge.

This role will focus on edge compute architectures, helping CNN move workloads closer to end users for improved performance and reliability. You'll bring experience in CDNs, infrastructure as code, and low-latency application development to help us deliver content to global audiences with speed and security.

The Daily

  • Develop edge-optimized services and applications using Rust or Go
  • Design and implement serverless or container-based architectures that deploy to CDNs or edge locations (e.g., Cloudflare Workers, AWS Lambda@Edge, Akamai EdgeWorkers)
  • Contribute to the code & architecture reviews and champion best practices for the organization by defining and evolving engineering standards
  • Comfortable with AWS services, Postgres, Elasticsearch, and Redis
  • Write infrastructure as code with Terraform, and help define repeatable and scalable patterns for edge deployments
  • Stay abreast with industry trends and announcements. Understand how changes can impact our business and raise concerns and/or propose solutions to mitigate
  • Code! Be passionate about software engineering with a strong sense of ownership for the code that you and your team write
  • Fail up, learn from research and experiments and ultimately choose the best solution to succeed the company objectives

The Essentials

  • 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience deploying applications to edge platforms and designing for global scale and latency sensitivity
  • Strong understanding of CDNs (e.g., Akamai, Fastly, Cloudflare) and how to integrate and extend them with custom logic
  • Ability to review company goals and lead towards success, through discussion with engineering peers, proposals, and ultimately breaking down the solution into meaningful tasks to execute or delegate to the team
  • Deep industry experience with modern development technologies, and hands-on familiarity with both client and server technology. Have a solid understanding of common software data structures and algorithms
  • A passion to grow professionally and continue developing along an individual contributor path

The Nice to Haves

  • Experience working on Kanban/Scrum teams and the tools used for project management
  • Active in open-source community
  • Experience with interviewing and talent acquisition
  • Experience contributing to or building edge computing frameworks or SDKs
  • Security-minded approach to edge application design and data handling

How We Get Things Done...

You can find them at www.wbd.com/guiding-principles/ along with some insights from the team on what they mean and how they show up in their day to day. We hope they resonate with you and look forward to discussing them during your interview.
