What you'll do...

We are looking for an experienced Principal Software Engineer to join the Customer Data Engineering team to advance the way we empower internal teams with best-in-class customer data products and privacy compliant data platforms. This hands-on role requires exceptional coding and design skills, a passion for technology and engineering excellence, and the ability to guide and mentor a team of engineers. You will play a critical role in our team, focusing on the development and execution of privacy first Customer data products and privacy frameworks to support Customer data privacy regulations. You will work closely with teams such as Marketing, Walmart Connect, Data Ventures, and Walmart+ to extend our Customer Data.

About Team: Customer Data Platform
Everyone has data, but the sheer volume of data at Walmart can be limitless. In the Data Engineering team, we help Walmart manage this data by building pipelines and data lakes to prepare big data for analysis and unlocking actionable insights in real-time. We also use cross-departmental data and machine learning to build a holistic view of true profitability, saving millions of dollars across item categories and geographies while assisting our leadership in making better decisions faster.

What you'll do:

As a Principal Software Engineer, you'll have the opportunity to

  • Guide and mentor, a team of engineers, conducting code reviews and leading design discussions to ensure engineering best practices.
  • Act as a technical authority, providing direction and expertise to the team.
  • Drive the adoption of coding standards, design patterns, and development best practices.

Architectural Leadership:

  • Lead the creation and maintenance of our technical architecture, aligning it with business goals and scalability requirements.
  • Lead the discovery phase of major projects, ensuring the design aligns with business goals and technical requirements.
  • Architect complex software systems (data/backend), ensuring performance, security, and scalability needs are met.

Technical Excellence:

  • Consistently produce high-quality software with a focus on unit testing, regular code reviews, and continuous integration.
  • Promote and enforce technical standards across the organization to achieve concrete outcomes and drive engineering excellence.
  • Develop comprehensive technical documentation and presentations to clearly communicate architectural decisions and design options.
  • Stay at the forefront of technological advancements, conducting research to identify emerging tools and methodologies.

Cross-functional Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define project scopes and milestones.
  • Collaborate closely with Product Management, Program Management & Business teams.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What you'll bring:

  • 15+ years of experience in software development, focusing on building large scale distributed data platforms.
  • Experience in multiple stack technologies Java, Python, Scala.
  • Proficiency in API development, GraphQL, Node.js
  • Well versed with Hadoop, Hive, Spark using Scala, Spark Serverless, Spark Streaming, Presto/Trino, Kubernetes, Cloud, Airflow and Data Lake concepts.
  • Advanced knowledge of distributed system design, design patterns, data structures, data modeling and algorithms.
  • Experience working with public cloud technologies such as Google Cloud Platform.
  • Experience with Kafka connect, Druid, Big Query and Looker is added advantage.
  • Extensive experience in the design, development, and delivery of software products with a large user base.
  • Track record in an architect role with large-scale software development with a focus on data-backed services and Privacy compliance.
  • Excellent decision-making skills with the ability to balance conflicting interests in a complex and fast-paced environment.

Sunnyvale, California US-04396:The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00-$286,000.00

Bentonville, Arkansas US-10735:The annual salary range for this position is $110,000.00-$220,000.00

Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses.
