What you'll do...
Walmart's Fuel Tax Team is focused on the administration of 300+ federal, state, and local taxes that are imposed on the wholesale purchase, intercompany sale, and subsequent retail sale of gasoline and undyed diesel fuel. The team has an annual responsibility for over $2.5 billion in tax imposed on the gasoline and undyed diesel fuel sold to customers and members of Walmart and Sam's Club domestic operations. The team is embedded with the business operations team and provides valuable insights to business partners and tax colleagues.
This role demands a diverse skill set, including cross-functional teaming, curiosity, tax technical knowledge, technology skills, data analytics, ownership mindset, critical thinking, team building, and problem solving. By expertly navigating the complex world of fuel taxes, the team supports Walmart's growth, profitability, and corporate responsibility, benefiting all stakeholders, from associates to customers to shareholders.

As a manager on the Fuel Tax team, you will...
- Manage the AvaTax Excise software service that is used for real-time calculation of federal, state, and local taxes imposed on the wholesale purchases and sales of motor fuel. Real-time calculation of applicable tax facilitates systematic reconciliation of suppliers' invoices; ensures a complete accounting for cost of goods sold at retail; provides timely input into retail pricing strategies; and ensures timely and accurate reporting of fuel and sales tax obligations to taxing authorities.
- Manage the Avalara Returns Excise software service that is used to prepare signature-ready fuel tax returns.
- Leverage data analysis tools (e.g., SAP-BI, Excel, PowerBI) to prepare additional returns, reconcile returns to general ledger accounts and compile key performance indicators.
- Manage tax audits and routine inquiries, negotiate with tax authorities, and resolve tax disputes.
- Research and analyze complex tax issues, provide guidance to business partners and other internal stakeholders on tax implications of business transactions, and utilize tax data to optimize tax strategies.
- Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders including industry peers, consultants, and government tax administrators.
- Comply with all applicable tax laws and regulations, monitor changes in tax legislation, and communicate implications to the organization.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to streamline and improve indirect tax processes and procedures.
- Mentor and develop junior team members, providing ongoing feedback and identifying opportunities for growth.

- Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field; CPA, CMI-Sales Tax or advanced degree in Taxation is a plus.
- 3-5 years of experience in the fuel industry with nationwide exposure to the taxation of fuel.
- Strong knowledge of motor fuel tax including taxation within the bulk transfer terminal system.
- Experience with the AvaTax Excise software service and Avalara Returns Excise software service.
- Proficiency in data analysis and leveraging data to optimize tax strategies.
- Experience working with multiple jurisdictions and navigating complex tax regulations.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.

The annual salary range for this position is $80,000.00-$155,000.00
Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses.
