What an Associate Technical Product Manager does at Visa:
Associate Technical Product Management (ATPM) is a complimentary form of product management with talent typically having a stronger technical background, and a clear focus & remit on working closely with their development & engineering colleagues to deliver product outcomes.

The role has different accountabilities and different talent attributes to that of an Associate Product Manager but sits firmly within the product management organisation. Generally, an ATPM works within one Product domain and has a deep understanding of the product capabilities of that domain but also a general understanding of the product capabilities across the entire Spend Clarity Enterprise product suite. 

They work in close to collaboration with Technical Product Managers (TPMs), Senior Technical Product Managers (STPMs) and Product Directors to understand the product strategy, market drivers and business goals and then execute the roadmap for the product domain. The ATPM role is to support the “why” and “what” inward phases of product development, from design to delivery within daily engineering dialogue.

They are accountable for feature and product outcomes in alignment with product strategy, value proposition & client/market needs. They are responsible for understanding what is valuable to the business, and what is feasible from development perspective, facilitating the requirement definition and working closely with the engineering colleagues to prioritise and plan the development work. 

While not accountable for delivery team operations, the ATPM does monitor delivery progress and will actively communicate risks to Product Management leadership & Engineering leadership where necessary. The Associate Technical Product Manager will also be involved in review/curation of any release notes and other Product documentation relevant to their Product domains.

Responsibilities:
Product Strategy Execution:

  • Understand product strategy, market drivers, and business goals
  • Execute a roadmap for the product domain in alignment with these factors

Collaboration:

  • Work closely with the broader product team: Technical Product Managers (TPMs), Senior Technical Product Managers (STPMs), Product Directors and Designers
  • Collaborate with engineering colleagues to ensure alignment on product development

Product Development:

  • Complete problem discovery and definition of ready for prioritised feature outcomes
  • Champion and articulate the “why” and “what” during product development phases

Outcome Accountability:

  • Ensure features and product outcomes align with product strategy, value proposition, and client/market needs
  • Monitor delivery progress and communicate risks to Product Management and Engineering leadership when necessary

Documentation and Communication:

  • Support the review and curation of release notes and other relevant documentation for the product domain

This is a hybrid position. Hybrid employees can alternate time between both remote and office. Employees in hybrid roles are expected to work from the office 2-3 set days a week (determined by leadership/site), with a general guidepost of being in the office 50% or more of the time based on business needs.

Qualifications

  • 2 years experience in Fintech software product development or related field (e.g. business analysis, product marketing, or customer success)
  • Familiarity with modern product development and design processes (Lean, Agile, Scrum)
  • An understanding of cross functional and empowered teams
  • Foundational analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to quickly understand and articulate business requirements of any items in the product backlog
  • Technical competence to be able to communicate with different roles and disciplines across a development team (e.g. Engineering, Design, Architecture)
  • Ability to lead Product demos with internal stakeholders
  • Entry level facilitation skills, with the ability to conduct effective workshops and meetings with small groups (e.g. 2-6 people)
  • Interest in Fintech, cards, payments, and/or corporate accounting practices is preferred
  • Desire to work in a highly collaborative fashion with internal stakeholders to drive successful product outcomes

What will also help:
Product Experience:

  • Relevant internships, coursework or projects in product management, software development, user experience, or data analysis
  • Basic understanding of product management principles and the software development lifecycle
  • Experience in writing user stories, feature specs, or product documentation

Technical Background:

  • Exposure to user research, data analysis, or A/B testing
  • Able to be productive with prototyping, and data analytics tools

Business Acumen:

  • Knowledge of market research, competitive analysis, and product strategy basics.

Communication Skills:

  • Highly responsive and confident communication style
