As a dedicated Decision Science Analyst II, you will provide decision support for business areas across the enterprise. Staff in this area will be responsible for applying mathematical and statistical techniques and/or innovative /quantitative analytical approaches to draw conclusions and make 'insight to action' recommendations to answer business objectives and motivate change. The essence of work performed by the Decision Science Analyst involves gathering, manipulating, and synthesizing data (e.g., attributes, transactions, behaviors, etc.), models and other relevant information to draw conclusions and make recommendations resulting in implementable strategies.

We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX, Phoenix, AZ, Colorado Springs, CO, Charlotte, NC, or Tampa, FL.

Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

This position can work remotely in the continental U.S. with occasional business travel.

The Opportunity

The Decision Science Analyst II will apply creative analytical techniques to assess model implementation and monitor model performance across the model lifecycle. This requires the use of standard programming languages, such as SAS and Python, to perform exploratory data analysis and automate standard analytical reporting to assist Fraud and Financial Crimes Leadership in monitoring and managing model risk. The Analyst will also support the development and maintenance of impactful model performance visualizations and dashboards using analytical software like Tableau to provide Leadership the ability to accurately assess model risk and performance.

  • Supporting new model deployment efforts, partnering with Technology, Data Science teams, Strategies teams and other partners to plan and implement model delivery.
  • Producing Implementation Risk Review model documentation and supporting the model implementation testing processes.
  • Meeting with Model Risk Management Validators and other partners to facilitate the completion of model validations and deliver key insights to model users on performance, strengths, and weaknesses of the models.
  • Maintaining the code base necessary to monitor model performance across time, and ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and consistency of reporting metrics.
  • Supporting the creation of written reports of ongoing model performance provided to Fraud and Financial Crimes leadership.
  • Performing analytical reporting required to track the value and health of models regarding loss mitigation, improvement to expense, and member experience.
  • Reviewing all automated code jobs to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Crafting and maintaining performance and model health dashboard visualizations provided to Fraud and Financial Crimes leadership.
  • Conducting document and code reviews of content written by teammates.

What you'll do:

  • Demonstrates intermediate business, analytical and technical knowledge to participate in discussions with cross functional teams to understand and collaborate on business objectives and influence solution strategies.
  • Applies sophisticated analytical techniques to tackle business problems that are typically medium to large scale with impact to current and/or future business strategy.
  • Applies scientific/quantitative analytical approaches to draw conclusions and make 'insight to action' recommendations to answer the business objective and drive the appropriate change.
  • Translates recommendation into communication materials to optimally present to colleagues for peer review and senior/lead analysts.
  • Incorporates visualization techniques to support the relevant points of the analysis and ease the understanding for less technical audiences.
  • Supports identifying and capturing the relevant and quality data sources required to fully answer and address the problem for the recommended strategy through testing or exploratory data analysis (EDA).
  • Thoroughly documents assumptions, methodology, validation and testing to facilitate peer reviews and compliance requirements.
  • Adopts emerging technology that can affect the application of scientific methodologies and/or quantitative analytical approaches to problem resolutions.
  • Delivers analysis/findings in a manner that conveys understanding, influences up to mid-level management, garners support for recommendations, drives business decisions, and influences business strategy.
  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What you have:

  • Bachelor's degree in quantitative analytics field such as Economics, Finance, Statistics, Mathematics, Actuarial Sciences, Operations Research, Data and/or Business Analysis, Data Science, or other quantitative subject area; OR 4 years of related experience in statistics, mathematics, or quantitative analytics (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • 2 years of experience in data/analytics or functional business experience within the respective industry of responsibility (i.e. P&C, Bank, Finance)
  • Demonstrates intermediate knowledge of mathematical and statistical techniques and approaches used to drive fact-based decision-making.
  • Intermediate knowledge of data analysis tools, data visualization, developing analysis queries and procedures in SQL, SAS, BI tools or other analysis software, and relevant industry data & methods and ability to connect external insights to business problems.

What sets you apart:

  • US military experience through military service or a military spouse/domestic partner
  • Graduate degree in a quantitative subject area.
  • 1+ years of experience using data querying tools like SQL, HiveQL, and NoSQL.
  • 1+ years of experience using a statistical programming languages like SAS and Python.
  • 1+ years of experience using Tableau for data visualization and creating dashboards.
  • Experience writing code that is automated and/or requires minimal manual intervention.
  • Experience in model validation and/or model governance.
  • Experience working with fraud and financial crimes models.

What we offer:

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location. The salary range for this position is: $74,210 - $133,570.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
