General Summary:
This is a highly visible position with direct reporting relationship to the VP, Global HR Business Partnerships. The incumbent will be responsible for providing strategic leadership in developing and executing a Human Capital strategy in support of the strategic direction of their client area in support of the overall Company strategy. This role will be accountable for delivering talent strategies that cultivate an innovative culture and address the most pressing talent opportunities of their client area to create value for the business and enable the company to grow faster.
They will be an integral member of the People and Communications extended leadership team working collaboratively with senior executives across the enterprise to develop and drive our Human Capital strategy to support Unum's growth and transformation as we scale new initiatives. They will play a pivotal consultative role in driving effective change management, supporting an environment shaped by continuous technological advancements and market dynamics.
This position, along with their team of HR Business Partners, will partner with senior leaders and their respective leadership teams to develop and execute the HR strategies and activities that foster growth, innovation, and organizational effectiveness. The individual in this role must comprehend business priorities and translate them into effective talent strategies to ensure our workforce is well-equipped to drive innovation and support growth in an increasingly complex business environment. The incumbent, along with their direct reports, will evaluate needs in areas such as Organizational Design, Change Management, Strategic Workforce Planning, Employee Engagement, Talent Development, Succession Planning, Inclusion and Diversity, and Compensation. They will be responsible for effectively partnering with the People and Communications Centers of Excellence to develop and implement innovative solutions that address the most critical talent needs of the business.
The candidate will have a demonstrated track-record of success in a large, global organization where they have built a high-performing team with the ability to execute key initiatives.
This position must be based in either our Chattanooga, TN or Portland, ME location
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Build strong relationships with Executive business leaders to offer thought leadership on organizational and people-related strategy and execution
- Develop and implement Human Capital plans to accomplish client area goals and objectives. Develop and execute an employee lifecycle approach to talent management focused on forecasting, talent acquisition, on-boarding, development, performance management, career planning, succession planning, and leveraging rigorous workforce analytics and insights to drive effective solutions.
- Drive large transformation and change initiatives aligned with business goals.
- Plan and lead organization design initiatives to streamline and implement new structures, roles and/or processes that create speed and efficiency and support rapidly shifting business demands.
- Leverage understanding of individual and organizational dynamics to facilitate talent movement into and throughout the organization.
- Assess employee training and development needs based on business strategy and collaborate with Learning & Development partners to help close gaps between current and future skills requirements.
- Provide input and guidance as it relates to our Total Rewards portfolio, to create employee excitement and motivation in striving for quality, efficiency, productivity, and innovation with emphasis on delivery of exceptional customer experiences.
- Assess organizational performance quantifiably, defining talent gaps and proposing HR solutions that support business objectives.
- Partner with the I&D team to develop a progressive and inclusive company culture aligned with company growth objectives and aspirations to be an employer of choice.
- Apply deep business acumen and the executional know-how of building and growing businesses.
- Lead and develop team members in effectively driving change and business transformation.
- Strengthen the senior leadership team by providing coaching and counsel to executives to further develop their leadership capability and capacity.
- Evaluate external market trends and provide recommendations to refine our internal practices and talent strategies for better alignment

Job Specifications
- Bachelor's degree required; Masters preferred from a progressive Human Resources and/or business program preferred
- 12-15+ years of progressively responsible experience in human resources roles, including at least 10 years as an HR Business Partner within a large, dynamic environment preferred; international experience also preferred
- Strong proficiency and proven success leading human resource teams to further business strategies and create competitive advantage
- In-depth knowledge of practical and leading-edge HR and Human Capital practices
- Significant and demonstrated ability to strategically align progressive talent strategies to business goals and objectives
- Deep understanding of the business strategy and key financial levers impacting enterprise financials and earnings results
- Strong business knowledge and capability to assess HR implications of business priorities
- Ability to communicate up, down, and across to a variety of constituencies, both verbally and in writing, including to C-suite executives, senior executives, and Board of Directors
- Ability to think and implement strategically
- Demonstrated capacity for managing multiple, complex initiatives; Proven track record of driving large scale, transformative change
- Proven ability to lead an HRBP team capable of driving change and business transformation aligned with business priorities
- Demonstrated capability in effective use of talent analytics to inform insights; Ability to draw accurate conclusions from data and determine appropriate solutions to address business challenges
- High degree of executive influence and relationship building skills is essential; Ability to position self as credible, proactive, and a trusted thought-partner
- Courage to take a stand and conviction to take risks
- Able to thrive and navigate within a fast-pace and at times ambiguous environment; ability to effectively manage issues that do not always have a process or a system in place; agile mindset
- This position requires up to 20% travel

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
$144,900.00-$273,800.00
Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
