General Summary:
We are seeking an experienced data scientist to join the Unum Marketing Analytics team. The ideal candidate is someone who is excited to transform data into actionable insights and impactful solutions which drive business results and improve the customer experience.
The role requires significant technical expertise in the fields of computer programming, applied statistics and data manipulation; and relies on increasing business knowledge. While some review by a manager is expected, this individual will take initiative in identifying and executing data science approaches to support business priorities.
Location: 2 days onsite per week at our Portland, ME, Chattanooga, TN, Columbia, SC or Atlanta (Sandy Springs), GA campus.
Job Specifications:
- Education: Bachelor's in a quantitative field required; Master's or PhD preferred.
- Experience: 6+ years of relevant professional experience preferred.
- Technical Skills:
- Programming & Automation: Expertise in building automated analytics pipelines using file I/O, databases, APIs, and cloud platforms. Experience with DevOps, data mining, web scraping, and object-oriented software preferred.
- Data Visualization: Proficiency in multiple visualization tools, with expertise in static and dynamic visualizations.
- Statistical Modeling: Strong knowledge of statistical inference, regression, machine learning, feature selection, and feature extraction. Experience leading end-to-end machine learning projects.
- Data Processing (ETL): Expertise in SQL, integrating multiple data sources, and troubleshooting complex queries. Ability to create logical data models and manage external data partnerships.
- Business & Leadership Skills:
- Strong communication and project management abilities.
- Experience in financial services preferred.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects while guiding junior staff.
- Experience working with executive leadership.
- Coaching and mentoring team members.
- Strong adaptability and change management skills.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and implement analytical solutions using optimization, simulation, and statistical methods to drive business decisions.
- Integrate and process large datasets from multiple internal and external sources.
- Construct predictive models to analyze trends, forecast behaviors, and assess risks.
- Interpret and communicate findings effectively to influence decision-making.
- Lead automation efforts to integrate solutions into business processes.
- Stay current with emerging statistical methods and tools.
- Mentor junior Data Scientists.

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
$89,400.00-$183,500.00
Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not.
