General Summary:

The Leave Consultant is responsible for overseeing various aspects of unpaid leave administration (also includes paid sick leave & accrued paid leave laws), driving initiatives, and leading project groups to enhance our leave management processes. This role requires a subject matter expert in FMLA, state leave laws, and corporate leave policies, with a focus on developing strategies for exceptional service delivery. This position is a blend of project managing and being a leave SME.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Delivers results for large/complex/cross-functional project initiatives related to our absence administration.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on FMLA, state leave laws, and corporate leave policies.
  • Consults with business leaders across Absence Operations and related organizations to translate a project idea into a defined project with goals, objectives and scope.
  • Implement new and changing state leave laws, ensuring consistent administration across platforms (including Canadian leave laws).
  • Collaborate closely with the legal team to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Engage with internal and external customers to communicate upcoming legislation and changes in the legal landscape.
  • Consult on best practices and recommend innovative solutions for comprehensive leave administration.
  • Act as the Leave expert for the RFP unit, providing insights for Requests for Proposals and Requests for Information.
  • Consult on best practices and recommend innovative solutions for end-to-end claims and leave administration.
  • Coordinate a team of Absence SME's to drive updates within the department and increase department wide engagement.
  • Partner with policies and procedures teams to develop and update workflows for FMLA, state, and corporate leave administration.
  • Provide mentoring and support to business partners as needed.
  • Serve as the marketing liaison for subject matter expert sign-off on relevant materials.
  • Ensure that appropriate communications and updates are sent to employers/customers annually, including standard practice documents.
  • Develops and implements communication and reporting mechanisms to manage issues, risks and timely delivery of initiative results.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in leave administration or a related area, with some project management experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of FMLA and state leave laws.
  • Knowledge of Unum products (i.e., STD, Leave, ADA, Paid Leave and LTD); Benefits; contract development; compliance; billing; and corresponding workflow processes.
  • Basic understanding of Employee Benefit programs, including employee benefit issues as they impact our customers.
  • Ability to plan, negotiate, organize, and influence internal and external resources.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply technology within Unum and corresponding business applications.
  • Experience in managing multiple, concurrent projects while directing and influencing a multitude of resources.
  • Works well under pressure, managing multiple and changing priorities within tight deadlines.
  • Strong leadership and presentation skills. Comfortable facilitating meetings and leading internal and external customer teams.
  • Ability to analyze problems and develop and execute creative, customer-focused solutions.
  • Ability to motivate and engage team members.
  • Ability to Travel.

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
$75,500.00-$142,700.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
