General Summary:

The Mainframe Technical Director oversees and enhances service delivery by leading agile, infrastructure, and operations teams to support and transform IT services. This role is pivotal in implementing portfolio initiatives, aligning delivery priorities with available technical, financial, and human resources. The individual collaborates closely with business leaders and technical stakeholders to define objectives and execute IT plans effectively.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead multiple agile teams to build, enhance, or support technology and business services, ensuring delivery aligns with strategic outcomes.
  • Engage in strategic planning with business and IT stakeholders to provide guidance on technology and architectural considerations.
  • Define and manage a portfolio roadmap, ensuring alignment with agreed business objectives.
  • Collaborate with IT leadership to address business and technology needs, emphasizing timely and successful delivery.
  • Foster relationships with stakeholders to drive the implementation of IT plans and act as a key point of contact for planners, designers, and operational partners.
  • Drive the application of the company's technical and architectural roadmap objectives.
  • Leverage IT expertise and emerging technologies to influence stakeholders and teams in developing and managing solutions.
  • Build and maintain a diverse talent pipeline to meet business goals and develop leadership within teams.
  • Support self-organizing teams by enabling autonomy and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure agile teams adopt best practices such as test-driven development, peer reviews, and continuous integration.
  • For infrastructure teams, oversee benchmarking and end-to-end management to optimize service delivery and cost.
  • Analyze trends and KPIs to improve organizational performance.

Job Specifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent technical experience.
  • 10+ years in a zOS sysplex environment with technical knowledge across mainframe teams.
  • 5+ years of People Management of Team Lead experience.
  • Expertise in director-level planning and execution.
  • Proven ability to interact with software and hardware vendors.
  • Deep understanding of mainframe hardware and software infrastructure.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for professional documentation.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Experience in establishing and documenting processes and procedures.
  • Demonstrated leadership and collaboration skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Analytical problem-solving skills with a proactive and resourceful approach.
  • Willingness to own issues through resolution.
  • Familiarity with mainframe areas such as TCP/IP, VTAM, SNA, SFTP, and disaster recovery concepts is preferred.
  • Experience implementing Communications Server and related ISV software on the z/OS platform preferred.
  • Exposure to large-scale, 24×7 production environments is helpful.

Key Areas of Focus

  • Identify and address mainframe operational trends, risks, and opportunities, and develop action plans.
  • Collaborate with teams to extract and analyze metrics for performance improvement and scalability.
  • Partner with Enterprise Architects to validate new technologies and recommend solutions.
  • Develop and maintain a technology roadmap to identify cost-reduction opportunities.
  • Act as an escalation point for significant outages and participate in business continuity and disaster recovery activities.
  • Lead mentorship and knowledge-sharing initiatives within mainframe teams.
  • Advocate for team needs and support professional development.

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
$109,100.00-$224,000.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
