General Summary:

This is generally an entry-level position; however, incumbent must be a highly motivated individual ready to build their expertise through professional application as well as continued actuarial education. The role will have support from a manager or mentor, however, will become proficient in handling intermediate level analysis. Employees in this position will have passed at least one Society of Actuaries exam and will be committed to attaining Fellowship. There are no direct reports associated with this position.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate commitment to career development and growing financial acumen by pursuing actuarial credentials and membership in the Society of Actuaries
  • Prepare and analyze intermediate level data for use in actuarial experience studies, valuation or pricing projects
  • Assist in maintenance of pricing and underwriting tools and provide support for helping others understand underwriting case specific issues by answering technical question
  • Develop reserve factors
  • Develop experience analysis reviews
  • Assist in maintaining valuation system
  • Assist in preparation of financial reports, tax returns and state filings as needed
  • Learn current pricing models and risk management practices
  • Contribute to product development and re-pricing initiatives
  • Communicate research results to manager both in written format and orally
  • Prepare routine reports
  • Continuous assessment of established training and work processes to identify areas for effectiveness and efficiency improvements. Contributes to operating effectiveness through information sharing, suggested process improvements and effective implementation of change
  • Communicate trends and issues identified and proactively recommend resolutions to management
  • Work on special projects that require actuarial research and analysis which may involve partnering with other business areas both in and out of finance.
  • Continuously build a specialized working knowledge of the company operations, systems and in the actuarial discipline
  • May perform other duties as assigned

Job Specifications

  • Bachelor degree required; GPA 3.2 or above
  • 0-1+ years of experience in an actuarial based role or equivalent relevant experience
  • Extensive coursework in statistics, math, economics, finance or actuarial science
  • Credit for at least one actuarial exam; limited relevant work experience preferred
  • Desire and ability to pass actuarial exams
  • Strong math aptitude and problem solving ability
  • Computer programming aptitude and knowledge (minimum of 6 months hands on statistical programming e.g. SAS, MatLab, Minitab or heavy Excel)
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership ability

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
$60,500.00-$123,400.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
