About the Role
Uber's Core Services Science team provides business insights and technical solutions within safety, insurance, customer support, risk, and payments to help our users experience a smooth ride or delivery on Uber's platform. Our work covers a broad range of analytics, including experimentation, causal inference, forecasting, business metrics and reporting, and predictive modeling. We are looking for a Staff Program Manager to lead our Science PMO, which supports a variety of tech teams across data science, product management and engineering. Things move fast at Uber and we need talent that moves at Uber speed while focusing on delivering sustainable solutions and outcomes.

- Portfolio Manager: you will manage a small but mighty team of Program Managers responsible for the end-to-end project lifecycle (from ideation to delivery). In addition to people management responsibilities, you will step down and "roll up your sleeves" to execute key projects that would otherwise be unresourced. Programs include a diverse set of initiatives such as implementing a scaled agile program for a 400+ person org, or overhauling Uber's support ecosystem to ingest more "ground truth" data into decision making engines.
- Impact Measurement & Resource Allocation: you will ensure we make consistent progress against our OKRs, and proactively identify and mitigate risks to unblock the team. You will design an impact measurement framework so that the team can ruthlessly prioritize our portfolio and ensure resources flow to where they are needed.
- Elevate our Insights: you will ensure that our Science organization addresses key strategic questions through analytical insights that build a long-term advantage for Uber.
- Analytics at Scale: your PMO has a dotted-line responsibility for our offshore analytics team (350+ data analysts, data engineers, and risk analysts) who provide leverage to our core team by transitioning project work to BAU.
- Problem Solve & Operate Autonomously: We're faced with new and exciting problems that need creative solutions every single day! One day might include going deep to conduct analysis of a particular issue, the next might require zooming out to craft the strategy of a multi-year program with only general guidance from leadership.
- Executive Communicator: you will think holistically about program communications and design an operating model that ensures the right people have the right information at the right time. You will also be responsible for organizational decision-making and stage-gating processes that perfectly balance speed and rigor.
- Transformation Lead: you will question, push, praise, prod, cajole, and otherwise irritate our organization to think differently and take action - holding teams accountable to delivering our grand ambitions.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree
- 7+ years of relevant experience
- Experience working with highly technical stakeholders (including product management, data science, engineering, AI/ML practitioners, etc.). You understand technical concepts and can translate them for non-technical audiences. In short, both engineers and business executives enjoy working closely with you.
- Proven ability to empower and influence people across a variety of job functions (regardless of your reporting relationship). You are able to quickly build relationships and gain respect in a cross-functional environment.
- Relevant program management certifications (PMP, Agile/Scrum Master, Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, Prosci, CCMP, etc.).
- Proficient with data and business intelligence tools (e.g., SQL, Tableau, Mixpanel, Google Data Studio).
- Experience with project management tools and software (e.g., Confluence/JIRA, Google Suite, Smartsheet, Asana).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree
- Technology, Analytics/Science, Business Intelligence, Consulting or related experience.
- Highly experienced in project management principles and best practices, with a demonstrated record of achievement in managing large and complex programs.
- Experience managing direct reports, as well as projects teams with 50+ dotted-line reports.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong emotional intelligence.
- Strong bias toward action (proven ability to drive end-to-end results, and think several steps ahead of the team to see around corners), with experience executing in a high-paced and dynamic work environment.
For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$176,000 per year - USD$195,500 per year.
