About the Role

As a Senior Engineering Manager at Uber, you will be leading a group of engineers and engineering managers to build global solutions while closely collaborating with product managers, data scientists, and other engineering teams. This role is within the Amsterdam-based Earner Payments and Cash organization and will be responsible for leading, mentoring, and managing a strong, diverse, high-impact team. The Earner Payments & Cash team is organized around 3 main themes:

  • Enabling payments between earners and spenders such as physical cash and QR codes.
  • Ensuring earners have a delightful experience while navigating their options to get paid quickly while providing them with options for building wealth through financial products.
  • Ensuring that 7-8 million earners globally are paid reliably each week.

What You'll Do

Lead an engineering organization of 16 to 30 talented engineers and engineering managers and be accountable for:

  • Ideating, developing and delivering payments product platforms.
  • Operational and engineering excellence initiatives.
  • Career growth for your org: you will personally develop engineering managers, and Staff-level ICs.
  • Organizational and cross-organizational impact through designing, iterating on, and delivering processes supporting Uber engineering.
  • Partnering with a diverse set of roles and individuals across disciplines like product management, talent acquisition, data science, product design and seniorities from fresh graduates to highly seasoned.
  • Improving resilience of Payments products, while helping unlock new use cases for earner money movement.

What You'll Need

  • 7+ years of engineering management experience, with demonstrated ability managing managers (4+ years).
  • An ability to architect and design robust, high-scale systems by challenging engineers to think bigger and more generically in developing their solutions.
  • Knowledge of large-scale, distributed systems, including SQL/NoSQL storage, transactional updates, asynchronous processing with message queues like Kafka, logging, system monitoring, observability and performance tuning.
  • Experience working with multi-functional, globally distributed teams to coordinate work and deliver solutions that span multiple areas.
  • Influencing and cross-functional collaboration with PMs, designers, data scientists, upstream business and infrastructure teams to identify, prioritize and solve problems.
  • Proven ability to grow teams, recruit and retain strong engineering leaders as well as performance management.
  • Knowledge of client-side architecture for large teams across native mobile and web platforms including dependency management, feature flagging, user interface trade-offs and funnel design.
  • Ability to keep pace with a strong engineering culture focused on reliability while prioritizing value to business stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Payments and an understanding of the worldwide and regional nuances in the domain.
  • Proven ability to drive the execution of complex initiatives, ensuring the delivery of resilient, high-performing systems that meet strict deadlines, business goals and user needs.
  • A background in product experimentation including the statistical knowledge, mechanics of experimentation and analysis so that you are able to interpret, debug and challenge experimental results when necessary.
