About the Role

Uber's Marketplace organization is tasked with designing pricing and dispatch algorithms to improve marketplace efficiency. We try to balance the needs of riders and earners on our platform and are responsible for growing the business by improving our users' experiences while achieving the company's financial goals. We build optimization algorithms, ML models, and the scalable systems that serve them across hundreds of markets globally.

The Session Value team is a new effort within Marketplace to help create a central mechanism to score our decisions incorporating both short-term and long-term effects on our riders and earners. Put differently, the team is responsible for defining a central marketplace objective that will then be optimized for across all Marketplace systems and as such will help decide the direction for the entire marketplace.

The team is a mix of experienced engineers and scientists with diverse backgrounds (such as Economics, ML and Operations Research) focused on understanding complex marketplace dynamics and user behavior.

You will be helping to build a scalable system to evaluate hundreds of thousands of decisions per second to inform all optimization systems across Marketplace.

What the Candidate Will Do

In this role, you will be joining a high-priority effort to:
  1. Build scalable real-time systems that allow all Marketplace optimization systems to score hundreds of thousands of decisions per second in real-time.
  2. Build tools for offline evaluation and simulation for decision making and policy selection.
  3. Support experimentation, iteration, and integration with Marketplace optimization systems.
  4. Help define monitoring and observability standards.
  5. Mentor junior engineers.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field
  • Proficient in programming languages such as Java, Go, and Python
  • Experience building distributed systems
  • Experience working with cross-functional partners such as Product and ML/Applied Science
  • Experience mentoring and onboarding junior engineers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with Java (streams, futures, DI frameworks such as Spring, etc...)
  • 5+ years of industry experience in software development
  • Experience with datastore technologies such as Redis and Cassandra
  • Experience with Kafka
  • Experience implementing mathematical optimization programs through tools like Gurobi
  • Demonstrated ability to build and support business critical systems, design for high availability, handle on-call issues

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$185,000 per year - USD$205,500 per year.
