Local Operations team, in collaboration with regional and central teams, leads our vision, strategy, execution and tactics for their country Operations. Operations is all about running our business on the ground and helping earners get the most out of Uber's platform.
South Africa mobility landscape is highly regulated. Compliance with legal and internal policy requirements is critical in building trust with regulators, earners and riders on the platform, and helps minimize the risk of disruption to the business.
The Sr Operations Manager role for Risk Operations is a unique opportunity to shape the strategies, policies and processes around earner access and eligibility experience and strive towards always having the right set of drivers and vehicles on our platform. The team is responsible for compliance to external regulations and internal policies, and to minimize operational risk on the platform.

We are looking for an outstanding problem solver with a solid understanding of the ride-sharing business. The ideal candidate has a good track record of resolving underlying causes of complex, multifaceted, new, and often cross-functional problems. The candidate is expected to be a good communicator, and be able to demonstrate strong stakeholder management skills.
What the Candidate Will Do
- Formulate, lead, implement and monitor the rollout of our operational risk strategy, frameworks, tactics and processes
- Lead cross-functional projects, collaborating closely with other functions including other verticals within Operations, Policy, Legal, Community Operations, Product, and Central Ops teams
- Proactively identify problems that scale, independently formulate solutions and operationalise initiatives to mitigate risk and improve operational efficiency
- Help problem-solve complex business problems and act as a thought partner for Cross-functional teams
- Engage with Product and Technology teams to represent South Africa, prioritize feature improvements and design new products
- Drive business decisions through analytical insights and customer empathy
What the Candidate Will Need / Basic Qualifications:
- Min 5 years of experience in operations, product, strategy or consulting
- Ability to take initiative and prioritise in a fast-paced work environment. You are comfortable dealing with uncertainty in a constantly-changing work environment.
- Strategic & operational problem solving and creativity
- Data-driven decision making mentality and sound business judgement through strong analytical thinking and experimentation
- Solid communication and stakeholder engagement skills - you are able to rally people behind a common goal and easily generate consensus if you're facing push back
- A strong sense of ownership and user empathy
Preferred Qualifications / Bonus points:
- SQL is highly desired. The role would require you to build your querying skills
- Previous experience in regulatory compliance or risk mitigation is a plus
- MBA is a plus
