Senior Counsel, Payments (Commercial)

We're looking for an exceptional, commercial attorney to be a key player in the payments org and work closely with the business in Uber's launch of new payments products and in the execution of important payments-related contracts.

The mission of the Payments Legal team is to be the key legal advisor to the business in its implementation of new payments-related initiatives, including the launching of innovative payments solutions and the mitigation of payments-related risk for the business.

What You'll Do

  • Work closely with the Payments Legal Team on payments and financial services legal matters for Uber and its entities.
  • Negotiate commercial agreements with payment processors, banks, payment networks and other payments-related providers for services globally.
  • Advise Uber's business teams on payments-related provisions in Uber's commercial agreements.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including business development, mobility and delivery teams, compliance and treasury in connection with payments-related commercial matters.
  • Advise the business on ongoing compliance with card scheme rules and in connection with the launching of new initiatives.

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of legal experience OR Minimum 7 years, including +1 year Uber internal.
  • J.D. and license to practice law in at least one U.S. state.
  • Extensive experience with commercial agreements and in advising on a wide range of commercial and contractual matters, including legal and business risk assessments.
  • Understanding of legal principles applicable to payments and risk, including the payments ecosystem (e.g., the role of acquiring and issuing banks, card networks, payment processors and gateways), regulatory implications (e.g., stored value, money transmission) and consumer protection laws.
  • Knowledge of major payment network rules and processes and experience dealing with major payment networks.

  • Strong, team-oriented collaborator, with confidence and flexibility to perform in nimble, rapidly changing and growing environments, as well as build relationships and gain credibility with business and legal partners.
  • Superior analytical and legal skills, mature judgment, innovative thinking and a desire to take the initiative and think two steps ahead.
  • Ability to translate complex legal issues and ambiguity into clear and simple advice, to communicate effectively with non-legal internal colleagues, and to interface with a broad range of senior business managers, executives and other colleagues and professionals across our company.
  • Experience in the negotiation and drafting of payments-related contracts not only for services in the U.S. but also in LatAm.

For New York, NY-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$232,000 per year - USD$258,000 per year.

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$232,000 per year - USD$258,000 per year.
