About the Role

We are looking for a data-driven Program Manager to become an integral part of our Delivery Central Safety team. Reporting directly to the Director of Delivery Safety, you will work in close collaboration with Safety Operations, Safety & G/R Product teams, Data Science, Policy, and Legal teams. Your core mission will be to identify and mitigate unique risks within the Uber Eats delivery environment through the development of data-driven safety solutions. Key areas of focus will include managing prohibited/restricted items, enhancing courier safety, and helping to ensure compliance with alcohol regulations.

As a pivotal figure on our team, you will be tasked with spotting emerging risks, quantifying the business impact of those risks, defining safety policies, and implementing effective interventions. Your work will be crucial in improving safety outcomes for customers, merchants and delivery partners, thereby enhancing our ability to innovate and maintain safety standards across the Uber Eats platform.

This role is a blend of strategy, program management, and data science, demanding strong cross-functional collaboration, adeptness at regional calibration, and a commitment to continuous improvement through robust analytics and program execution.

Ideal candidates will have a background in safety or risk management, proficiency in handling large datasets, ability to scale textual analysis and experience in developing business or operational strategies from the ground up. If you are data-obsessed, adept at experimentation, and skilled in iterative processes to achieve operational excellence and uphold the 'Uber' standard of quality, this role offers a dynamic intersection of problem-solving, creativity, leadership, and execution.

What You'll Do:

  • Problem Solving: Proactively identify and address emerging issues that could adversely affect the business. Utilize your analytical skills to measure the impact of these issues, advocating for well-resourced and scalable solutions.
  • Policy Development: Combine your analytical prowess with operational discipline to develop robust safety policies and procedures. These will drive safety performance improvements and help achieve business objectives.
  • Safety Strategy: As a critical member of the team, you will help define the global safety strategy for the Grocery & Retail and Direct Delivery verticals. Collaborate with GMs and other key stakeholders within the Delivery organization to co-create a safety vision and roadmap, and execute transformative projects based on solid data and insights.
  • Technical Acumen: Our Delivery Safety Programs are deeply data-driven, requiring complex technical solutions for large-scale process implementation / optimization. Partner closely with Data Science and Product teams to automate, systematize, or centralize scalable processes.
  • Collaborate to Solve Problems: Maintain regular communication with senior leaders to update them on emerging safety issues and ensure that mitigation strategies are appropriately prioritized and resourced. Work collaboratively across various teams at Uber, including Product, Data Science, Safety Support, and Legal, to devise effective safety solutions.
  • Communication: Craft and convey clear and persuasive narratives from complex data and analyses to influence high-level discussions. Ensure alignment among stakeholders with diverse interests.
  • Leadership and Influence: As a leader and thought leader, engage and influence stakeholders at every level of the organization to pursue common goals of making the platform safer. Clearly communicate tradeoffs and show how your vision for the future of safety in the gig economy will help drive sustainable growth.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in business management in operations, strategy, safety, compliance, technology, risk management, or a related area
  • Proficiency in SQL required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Risk Management: Demonstrated expertise in applying risk management frameworks effectively
  • Familiarity with Hive, Spark, and other big data tools is highly advantageous
  • Analytical Skills: Strong capability in extracting insights from data, summarizing learnings, and making data-driven decisions. Must possess a basic understanding of experimental design and statistical methods
  • Business Acumen: Excellent business judgment, including the ability to assess process performance and financial viability through analytical thinking
  • Operational Experience: In-depth knowledge of business operations with the ability to manage and prioritize under competing pressures
  • Problem Solving / Storytelling: Skilled in tackling complex problems, simplifying them, and clearly communicating solutions to a broad range of senior stakeholders, both internally and externally. Must be adept at building and maintaining strong relationships
  • Stakeholder Management: Work closely with stakeholders across the entire Uber organization (Safety Ops, DS, Product, Eng, Policy, Legal, Operations)
  • Attention to Detail: High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously without sacrificing quality
  • Adaptability: Must be a flexible self-starter who is comfortable with rapid changes and a fast-paced environment

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$152,000 per year - USD$169,000 per year.
