About the Role

A Principal Engineer at Uber, has a profound impact across a wide spectrum of businesses and technological domains, they influence a multitude of projects across various geo locations. The role will be pivotal in shaping scalable systems with efficient coding practices.

As the Principal Engineer of the AV team you'll be a part of Uber's Platform Engineering team and be the face of the AV team internally and externally. You'll lead the long-term design, development and implementation of the latest machine learning techniques for AV 2.0. The ideal candidate will be able to identify issues, provide solutions and implement the fixes as well as setting a high technical excellence bar in all things we do. You'll be able to inform and advocate business decisions within Platform Engineering and partner engineering teams which enables Uber's mission of helping people go anywhere and get anything and earn their way.

What You'll Do

  • Technical Leadership: You'll advise on the build and design of AI systems that extract maximum value out of our global network of operations which will include perception modeling and semantic understanding for AV use cases
  • Project Execution: You'll help shape and evaluate the latest machine learning techniques for AV 2.0. You'll be one of the go to persons for AV technologies at Uber
  • Innovation and Strategy: You'll be a key player for AV cloud strategy across multiple technology stacks at Uber which will include Hardware, Data, AI/ML, Computer Vision, etc
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Collaborate and influence the product vision and roadmap in collaboration with the product and business teams
  • Mentorship: Provide thought leadership and technical leadership to more junior engineers
  • Be an owner and strive for excellence in your role

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in AI, ML, Autonomous Systems, Robotics and/or Computer Vision
  • 5+ years of experience in Autonomous software and/or hardware development:
  • Software: Computer vision, machine learning, optimization and algorithms design and implementation
  • Hardware: Instrumentation of device drivers and firmware
  • Data: Labeling, collection, storage and retrieval of data
  • Proficient in Python and Linux
  • Familiar with OpenCV, TensorFlow/PyTorch
  • Expertise with Perception technologies

Bonus Points If

  • Masters degree or Phd in Autonomous Systems, Robotics and/or Computer Vision
  • Expertise with Prediction, Planning in addition to Perception for Autonomous systems
  • Hardware: Expertise designing, building, using AV sensors and related device drivers and firmware
  • Comprehensive knowledge and/or experience designing/building AV 1.0, AV 2.0, ADAS systems

To accelerate the path to L4 autonomy using AV 2.0 technology, this team works on sensor data collection, processing, labeling, indexing and search to build comprehensive driving scenarios. These include perception modeling, semantic understanding, simulations, etc.

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$324,000 per year - USD$360,000 per year.

For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$324,000 per year - USD$360,000 per year.
