About the Role
We are seeking a highly experienced Program Manager and Operational Safety Leader to establish and maintain an effective safety program targeted to fleet operators in the fast-evolving field of autonomous mobility and delivery at Uber. This role requires a strong understanding of the core concepts of a safety management system as tailored to autonomous vehicle operations both with and without vehicle operators (i.e. rider only or driverless) and knowledge of the relevant industry standards that inform these activities. The successful candidate will have direct experience establishing one or more safety programs under an overarching safety management system framework and strong familiarity with safety concern reporting, incident response protocols, oversight programs for vehicle operators, safety performance metrics, business continuity planning, and safety assurance.

Day to Day
In this role, you will be responsible for developing a safety program for AV fleet operations that assures the relevant infrastructure, operations and processes utilized in the course of AV rides and deliveries on the Uber Platform complies with safety-related regulatory requirements and conforms to industry standards and best practices that have been adopted at Uber and by our partners. This role will establish Uber's internal safety standards and associated requirements to be applied across all of Uber's AV fleet partners operating on the Platform and develop approaches to audit conformance with those standards and requirements. This will be a highly cross-functional role, requiring collaboration with internal and external stakeholders in the complex and evolving AV space. This role will involve strategy, program management, and partner engagement responsibilities with a strong focus on cross functional collaboration.
Basic Qualifications:
- Safety Management Expertise: Minimum of 5 years of industry experience implementing and managing safety management programs in a transportation sector (2+ years experience in autonomous vehicles required)
- Operational Safety: Experience implementing or supporting safety programs related to the use of vehicle operators for development, testing and operations.
- Program Management: Proven track record managing safety programs, particularly at an AV developer, with experience leading cross-functional and cross-industry teams.
- Communication & Relationship Building: Exceptional communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills, with the ability to work across different cultures and industries.
- Standards Development: Experience working with industry standards organizations such as SAE, AVSC, IEEE, and/or ISO to develop standards and best practices related to autonomous vehicles
- Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in safety, engineering, or related technical fields.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in safety, engineering, or related technical fields
- Experience working with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) or other SMS frameworks
- Experience performing data analysis and statistical analysis of operational safety data to generate safety performance indicators
- Experience presenting to federal, state and local regulators on the safety-related programs and activities
- A continuous improvement approach, with a history of quick adaptation and self-directed learning
- A passion for creating empathetic, inspiring, and innovative transportation solutions in pursuit of positive societal outcomes
For New York, NY-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$152,000 per year - USD$169,000 per year.
For Pittsburgh, PA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$122,000 per year - USD$135,500 per year.
For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$152,000 per year - USD$169,000 per year.
For Washington, DC-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$152,000 per year - USD$169,000 per year.
