About the Role

The Safety & Insurance Litigation team oversees and manages litigation and claims across the U.S. & Canada arising out of Uber's insurance policies. In doing so, the team works hand-in-hand with our insurance partners and outside counsel to drive innovation and solutions. The team also works closely with Uber's business teams, from operations to safety, to evaluate and manage risk. The team is currently searching for a Safety & Insurance Litigation Counsel for its US West region with expertise in the insurance defense industry and experience managing robust insurance defense litigation. This role is based at Uber HQ in San Francisco, California.

  • Manage a portfolio of claims and litigation in the US West
  • Provide guidance to outside counsel on case strategy
  • Draft and review various court documents such as pleadings, discovery, and motions
  • Work across our business and legal teams on risk management initiatives
  • Collaborate with team members for operational efficiency and process revision
  • Partner with Uber's other teams on insurance, risk, safety, and regulatory efforts

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of legal experience in private practice and/or in house
  • J.D. and license to practice law in at least one state

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience litigating claims/cases arising from property and casualty insurance
  • Ability to manage cases through pleadings, motion practice, discovery, dispute resolution and trial
  • Solid case evaluation abilities, critical thinking skills and the capacity to oversee a large portfolio of matters independently
  • Deposition experience and first chair arbitration or trial experience
  • Excellent business judgment, communication, and interpersonal skills (with a high level of emotional intelligence)
  • Mature judgment, innovative thinking and a desire to take the initiative and think two steps ahead
  • Ability to translate complex legal issues and ambiguity into clear and simple advice, to communicate effectively with cross-functional colleagues and to interface with a broad range of senior business managers, executives and other colleagues and professionals across our company
  • Salesforce or other database experience
  • Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work both on a team and independently
  • Technical know-how with at least an intermediate level of computer skills, including a working knowledge of Google suite, Excel, Word, Adobe, and other web-based applications
  • Passion for the work and a growth mindset
  • Flexibility and willingness to help out wherever needed

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$208,000 per year - USD$231,000 per year.
