Within USDS, our eDiscovery team plays a critical role in supporting TikTok's Global Legal Team as well as Privacy & Security efforts by providing expertise in litigation discovery processes such as legal holds, preservation, collection, processing, review workflows, compliance management systems development, and cross-functional collaboration.

We are seeking a eDiscovery Data Preservation Engineer who will spearhead operational excellence within TikTok's eDiscovery program's strategy; implementing scalable workflows; collaborating with stakeholders across Legal, IT administrators, Privacy teams, and external counsel; while ensuring compliance with litigation requirements globally.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate on end-to-end workflows for the identification, preservation, collection, analysis, and reporting of electronically stored information (ESI) from multiple repositories (structured/unstructured data sources).
- Develop automated systems/tools using scripting/programming languages (Python/R/SQL) or APIs to streamline legal hold notifications and ensure defensible chain-of-custody processes.
- Apply forensic methodologies to extract metadata/artifacts from devices such as servers, cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP), endpoints (Windows/macOS/Linux), mobile devices (iOS/Android), or proprietary systems.
- Build machine learning models or utilize statistical methods for analyzing large datasets related to eDiscovery matters-identifying patterns indicative of anomalies or potential risks.
- Design dashboards/reports that provide visibility into preservation metrics such as completeness rates, processing statuses, and timeline adherence.
- Partner with internal stakeholders including Legal Teams (Global & US), IT administrators/developers, Privacy/Security teams on scalable solutions that balance operational efficiency with compliance mandates.
- Act as technical SME on hybrid projects involving forensic techniques alongside applied analytics/data modeling approaches; provide support in translating complex technical findings into actionable insights during investigations/litigation cases.
- Maintain industry best practices around defensibility standards by staying up-to-date on evolving legal/compliance regulations impacting cross-border data transfers or multi-jurisdictional discovery efforts.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Engineering/Data Science/Cybersecurity/Law preferred-or equivalent industry experience in hybrid eDiscovery/data engineering roles.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience working on eDiscovery processes including legal hold management workflows; familiarity with tools like EnCase/Nuix/Relativity preferred.
- Strong programming/scripting skills using Python/R/SQL; ability to create custom scripts or automation frameworks supporting evidence collection/preservation tasks at scale.
- Knowledge of forensic principles including metadata extraction/log analysis/memory dumps/file carving across platforms such as macOS/APFS/HFS+, Windows NTFS/File System Events Logs/Security Logs/Linux daemons/crons/security artifacts/cloud environments (AWS S3 buckets).
- Experience building predictive models/statistical analyses leveraging libraries like TensorFlow/scikit-learn/Keras/Pandas/MATLAB where applicable!
