Visual Journalist, Japan
Reuters is looking for a Visuals Journalist (Video) with strong news judgment to join our Tokyo newsroom.
We're seeking an experienced journalist with a passion for visual storytelling, comfortable with covering events from politics and sports to natural disasters and entertainment in Japan and beyond. The ideal candidate will play a hands-on role in the daily news video production from Japan.
The successful candidate should have a strong video filming background, desk and field producing experience as well as excellent video editing skills. Fluency in Japanese is essential alongside strong English language and writing abilities.

- A confident storyteller through video.
- Cover a variety of news events in Japan, including breaking news and feature stories.
- Independently film news events and features using broadcast-quality video cameras, mirrorless cameras as well as other equipment.
- Produce, film, edit video content, and craft precise news stories under tight deadlines.
- Conceptualize and pitch story ideas suitable for broadcast and digital platforms.
- Collaborate within a team from planning to production.
- Coordinate closely with text reporters and photographers on stories.
About You
- At least five years of editorial experience in video news.
- Demonstrated news judgment, a flair for visual storytelling, and a passion for breaking news.
- Comfortable operating broadcast-quality video cameras and/or mirrorless camera for news filming.
- Genuine interest in exploring new filming technique and technology.
- Experience in producing, editing, and writing news scripts.
- Ability to multitask under time constraints, adapt to shifting priorities, and deliver accurate, compelling stories within stringent timelines.
- Willingness to work extended hours, weekends, and travel at short notice for breaking news coverage.
- Clear understanding requirements for broadcasters and digital clients.
- Strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Eagerness to learn new skills and adapt to evolving technologies.
