Do you love legal research, editing and writing? We are looking for a diligent Legal Editor (Casual) to join our team of experienced editors and work collaboratively in a team with a strong work ethic and a passion for the law.

To be successful in the role you will love legal research, editing, writing, and possess a high degree of attention to detail. You'll enjoy learning, be receptive to instruction and feedback. You will be a self-starter who can manage your own workload, while working collaboratively within a team environment. You will be able to work within our publishing conventions and priorities.

About the role

  • Constitute, develop and maintain content of assigned publications - ensure legislation, case law and commentary are current, accurate and relevant.
  • Assess all material submitted by authors for accuracy and relevance.
  • Edit material for content and presentation, ensuring requirements are met.
  • Undertake cross-referencing, classification and other editorial tasks.
  • Write commentary, as and when required, on topical points of law.
  • Review and edit legal commentary and journal articles created by other employees, authors, and others.
  • Identify key legal issues in editorial materials.
  • Adhere to editorial publishing schedules and quality standards.
  • Verify own work and that of colleagues and external contributors as required for accuracy, completeness, and quality, following the New Zealand Law Style Guide, and ensure that the information is properly presented and organised.
  • Maintain and develop legal knowledge and skills training as required to complete work and stay current on legal trends and developments related to the employee's editorial responsibilities.

About You:

  • Hold a New Zealand Law degree
  • Have post-qualification legal experience (desirable) - or similar experience
  • Possess strong legal research skills and familiarity with New Zealand legal resources
  • Ability to interpret, analyse, organise, and communicate complex legal material
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and understanding of its importance from a customer perspective
  • Ability to adapt quickly and respond positively to change
  • A commitment to both team and personal goals
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks and work efficiently
  • Editorial experience an advantage
