PPD, the clinical research business of Thermo Fisher Scientific, has an exciting new opening for a VP, Head of Data Capabilities, PPD Digital. This is an outstanding opportunity to lead the data revolution in our Clinical Research Division. In this role, you will play a crucial role in defining and implementing our data strategy, fostering innovation, and ensuring operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities:
Data Strategy & Leadership:


  • Develop and implement the global PPD data strategy in line with our digital transformation goals.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Data Officer and senior leaders to create a data roadmap that supports all PPD business needs.

Real-World Data (RWD) Strategy & Acquisition:

  • Collaborate with internal business teams to acquire, integrate, and manage real-world data assets to improve clinical trials and post-market research.

Data Platforms & Architecture:

  • Coordinate the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of our data platforms and infrastructure.
  • Leverage cloud-based solutions and advanced analytics tools to support research data needs.

Data Governance & Compliance:

  • Implement a comprehensive data governance framework ensuring data quality, integrity, privacy, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Lead data stewardship programs to foster accountability for data usage across the organization.

Data Management & Integration:

  • Lead the management of lab, clinical, operational, and real-world data across various systems and platforms.
  • Ensure the availability of clean, accurate, and timely data to support decision-making.

Advanced Analytics & Innovation:

  • Support the development of advanced analytics capabilities to improve data-driven insights and predictive modeling in clinical research.
  • Facilitate the use of tools powered by artificial intelligence (AI) in data analysis, trial optimization, and patient recruitment.

Stakeholder Collaboration & Communication:

  • Work closely with digital technology, IT and operational teams to understand data needs.
  • Communicate data capabilities and results to both technical and non-technical collaborators.

Team Leadership & Development:

  • Build and lead a high-performing data capabilities team.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

This is a home-based position in the US and requires 15-25% travel.

Preferred locations are Massachusetts, North Carolina.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent and relevant formal academic / vocational qualification (Master's degree preferred)
  • Previous experience in leading global data groups that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job (comparable to 15+ years' experience)
  • In some cases an equivalency, consisting of appropriate education, training, and/or directly related experience will be considered sufficient for an individual to meet the requirements of the role.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong financial savvy with solid understanding of budgeting, forecasting and resource management
  • Excellent judgment and decision-making capability, able to apply critical and analytical thinking skills and handle complex/ambiguous situations
  • Strong social skills and influencing at all levels, including the capability to build strong relationships in a matrix organization
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Cultural awareness with ability to work across geographies and cultures
  • Authority in process improvement techniques
  • Capable of driving strategic plans using established relationships
  • Capable of coaching, mentoring, and motivating staff to define and achieve organizational goals
  • Capable of analyzing data, anticipating, and mitigating risk, exercising sound judgment, problem solving, process-mapping, and decision-making while working under pressure and at times with limited desired information
  • Outstanding oral/presentation and written communication skills (English)

Management Role:

  • Directs through lower management levels. Has responsibility for leading a function that includes multiple related departments. In some instances may be responsible for a functional area (as determined by executive management) and not have subordinate supervisors or employees. May lead employees across multiple regions.

Compensation and Benefits
The salary range estimated for this position based in North Carolina is $175,000.00-$262,700.00.

This position may also be eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and/or individual performance results in accordance with company policy. We offer a comprehensive Total Rewards package that our U.S. colleagues and their families can count on, which includes:
