Your Impact
The Staff Optical Engineer will join a multi-functional engineering team supporting new product development for flow cytometers, cell sorters, and accessory instrumentation. This position will work with a variety of R&D engineering staff for successful support of new product development and will be passionate about optical design, analysis, and testing. In addition, the candidate will participate in strategic product brainstorming sessions, researching new technology, and supporting existing products as needed. A Day in the Life

In this position, you will lead the definition, design, implementation, and characterization of optical excitation and detection systems. You will act as a lead member of a multidisciplinary R&D project team developing new instruments for flow cytometry. You will provide optical system design mentorship to development teams in the following ways:

  • Specify system(s) of optics to either deliver excitation to samples or collect emitted light and transport it to detection region
  • Perform optical analysis to demonstrate the optical detection concept compliance with specifications
  • Establish tolerances for optics that balance cost and performance to meet cost and performance targets in instrument specification and schedule turning points in product development plan
  • Work with mechanical engineers in design of optomechanical assemblies that meet the specification of the optical detection subsystem
  • Assemble, align, activate, and test prototype optical systems in laboratory environment
  • Develop optical alignment and other manufacturing procedures according to Product Development Guidelines
  • Mentor, educate, and train other engineers on the multi-functional R&D team in regards to optical design methodologies.
  • Initiate and lead design changes that improve cost and quality of products that are currently in design or already in manufacturing.
  • Identify key performance indicators that measure the progress and success of the optical design team and present updates to management.

How Will You Get Here?

Education

  • Master's in Optics or Physics AND 5+ years of related experience

Experience

  • Experience in leadership role within an R&D development environment focused on biological instrument design
  • Proven experience in the selection, design, and optimization of gratings, filters, mirrors, photodiode, CCD/CMOS, SPAD, LED and other light sources
  • Hands-on experience with optical systems in lab and manufacturing environment crucial
  • Intimate knowledge of optical modeling software packages such as ZEMAX, Code V, or OSLO, plus non sequential ray tracing tools
  • Experience finding opportunities for and leading multi-functional teams through business process changes
  • Experience quantifying a teams performance and clearly communicating progress relative to management

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Demonstrated design experience with mounting, bonding, and adjustment of optical components
  • Familiarity with MatLab or other mathematical software tools packages is very desirable
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to respond quickly to changes in project requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and build collaborative relationships in order to establish credibility across functions and teams
  • Leads, Inspires, influences, and empowers employees across a global matrix to achieve goals
  • Able to decisively lead and empower teams to develop impactful strategies and plans
  • Lead a multi-functional team in the resolution of sophisticated technical system issues to improve performance, reliability, and overall quality
  • Create clear presentations that communicate the teams progress on design projects to management

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in developing life science systems optical systems
  • Experience with the optical systems of flow cytometry analyzers and sorters
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to efficiently evaluate, prioritize and handle multiple and changing programs/projects and priorities.
  • Must be tolerant to change, ready to tackle new challenges and open to learning new skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multi-functional design initiatives to improve product cost, performance, and quality

In some cases an equivalency, consisting of a combination of appropriate education, training and/or directly related experience, will be considered sufficient for an individual to meet the requirements of the role.

Compensation and Benefits
The salary range estimated for this position based in Colorado is $108,000.00-$179,000.00.
