Discover Impactful Work:
Are you a master's student eager to dive into the world of computational physics and transmission electron microscopy (TEM)? Using computational physics methods, you will investigate the fundamental methods describing the interaction of high energy electrons and materials. Your contributions will improve our understanding of the TEM signals and thus aid in serving science and new discoveries by our microscopes.
Scope and Objectives:
- Conduct a literature review on the interaction of materials with high-energy electron beams and numerical techniques for simulating these effects.
- Design and implement a code for solving the Schrödinger equation.
- Apply the solver to typical materials used in TEM.
- Compare your solutions with those acquired from other approximate methods.
- Investigate performance improvements, by using GPUs.
- Explore additional topics, such as the inclusion of inelastic scattering in the solutions.
Qualifications:
We encourage candidates with the following qualifications to apply:
- Currently enrolled in a master's program in physics, mathematics, or a related field.
- Knowledge of linear algebra and differential equations.
- Familiarity with numerical methods in physics, such as, error analysis, differentiation, and integration.
- Proficiency in Python.
Additional Advantages:
- Experience with code development in Git.
- Knowledge of parallel processing.
- Understanding of electron microscopy.
Duration:
The project can be tailored to fit within a 6-9 month timeframe, depending on your availability and academic requirements.
